In theory it's a good thing but honestly it hasn't worked to connect humans and has just exacerbated the issue of superficiality that is gripping two generations.

When wikileaks recently asked people what they would most like to see revealed my first instinct was the Vatican archives but then I got to thinking. Imagine if someone did hack facebook and had a large enough server to dump it onto. Imagine the chaos that would ensue when every single private conversation or message through facebook was revealed.

I'd be fine because I don't use it but society would fall apart.

Every affair, every comment said behind a friend's back, every business action deliberately designed to screw over someone, everything. All out in the open. Marriages, friendships, relationships, businesses and governments would all disintegrate within weeks.

It would essentially be back to square one for much of society.

Perhaps it's a result of the numerous poor choices I've made with my life but I can't help but love the idea of something like that happening.

It is one thing for a guy to cheat on a girl and a girl to cheat on a guy. Males dont veiw love the same way girls do. A guy can have sex as much as he wants and still love his main girl but once a girl jas sex with another guy the relationship is over. Much like the internet could have bern the greatest archive of human knowledge in all of history as well as a tool to reunite people worldwide, it's now 90% porn and the remaining 10% is cat videos, shitposting and vine fiends. You can create a great tool, but you can never control how people are gonna use it.

The fact that all of this data is controlled by a single corporation is fine in principle since people willingly give up every aspect of their life to have the convenience of the tool. Hell even though we know that they're in cahoots with various intelligence agencies, if people still think it's worth giving up their privacy then it's up to them.
My main problem is that the site tracks everyone on the planet regardless of whether the person uses the service. Essentially such a large majority of the population use the site that they are able to "fill in the gaps" so to speak. If you've never used the site, you still have what's called a "shadow profile" which is corroborated from data provided by other people, either manually or by handing over access to their phone and email contacts. When a user signs up to FB nowadays they already have a mostly full profile ready and waiting for them, and most people consider this to be useful rather than nightmarish like it actually is.
Apart from that, FB is shown to increase levels of depression in people that use it due to the skewed view of other people's lives it provides. It's also a time sink in general, many people spend multiple hours each day scrolling through inane shit and even when they're in social situations they insist on "checking" FB every few minutes on their phone. It's like a drug, except instead of making people feel good it makes them feel shitty. Ironically social media makes people much less social in real life.
So in conclusion FB is overwhelmingly a bad thing, but most people give no shits about any of the negative points and stick to it for the one positive aspect, which is that everyone else is on it.
