I've befriended a lot of cats over my life, even completely feral kittens no one knew about because they would run and hide from everything but me. Just scratch in that spot right behind their ears and under their jaw and they will rub into you and fall over

Head, back and butt are all fine. Anywhere else is a no-fly zone. Your cat's mileage may vary when it comes to rubbing his chin or stroking all the way to the tip of his tail.

Don't ever put your hands anywhere near a cat's feet, paws or belly. This will almost always trigger playful aggression, especially in male cats. Also don't put your hands or feet anywhere near Kitty when he's rolling around on the floor or visibly hyped up.
