I feel the same way.
I believe it's the "the mother is worried and sad. She looks like she's doing her best but she just cannot fix whatever thing has broken her child." She knows how terrible the things are, they both know, but she cannot do anything about that.

The "fake normality" (Just a kid watching Toy story) makes it sad. It makes you both feel for the mother and for the child.
You expect a kid to have fun and giggle, but she's sad. It's the juxtaposition.

Also using toy story is a cheap trick if you've the right age.
I remember when I went watching toy story with my parents, or at least, I know i did. I associate that to a positive feeling.

Seen it associated with sadness makes it feel wrong and makes you "feel" as the little girl (We all saw toy story; She won't have it.).

Also, Toy story. Happy toys remind of childhood, while in the panel next to it you have a broken childhood, or at least a sad child.

Also, Woth noticing is that the child is not crying, she's just there.

It's that kind of thing that feel "wrong". The I'd rather not look at it kind of reaction.

I don't know if it was studied, but it was done pretty well on the feel side.
