My long-time friend from middle school just got himself arrested and jailed for the second time this year for possession of heroin.

I actually helped this dude build his resume, helped him get jobs on two separate occasions (fucked both up, (held first job for 3 weeks second job for 15 days hardly). I didn't want to realize how fucking real these problems are, but WOW is this dude down the fuckin rabbit hole or what.

Things got real hairy with this real quickly. I still don't think I've fully accepted that my friend is gone already, or that he's gonna die.
This guys mom has called me choking on her tears just looking for any semblance of information. It's always "Isaac's in jail!", "Isaacs in the big city he hasn't come home for three days!" It's bad enough hearing your own mom cry, but how are you gonna go and put your last standing friends through that with your parents?
His parents are too good for him. His other friend and I are too good for him.

It sounds like, truthfully, your friend has been misusing for a matter of years. He's spent years and years with idle hands, not building himself up or honing ANY skills. All of his energy and intellect goes to hiding and maintaining this habit.
You're not naive. You saw your old friend hurting, and you tried to help him. Addicts will do anything, anytime, to anyone for no reason.

Damn, that's like losing the lottery. I wonder how many people he PM'd.
Getting high is one thing, but chasing the dragon with intravenous heroin is something that very few people seem to come back from. And if they do it's a struggle that defines who they are every day after that.

To be honest, I was sorry at first too. But, it's hardly a loss anymore. He cares about no one but the dragon, and now I can see that he doesn't care about getting/staying clean. He just wants to keep doing what he's doing and wants everyone to stop looking.
