Firstly, its not a protein, its an amino acid. I can't remember organic reaction schemes very well but I'm pretty sure you can reduce it to a primary alcohol with some weird boron compound then im not sure what you'd do to get rid of the hydroxyl group. high school was so long ago I, can't remember.

But there's no reason to do this because if you're trying to synthesise something there are way better ways to do it than starting from tryptamine, and if you're not there's no point because tryptamine gets hit hard by MAO so there's no way you'll get any effects from it
