ok i'm very drunk right now and i'm laying down in an awkward position and i'm using a tiny thinkpad keyboard that doesn't suit my finger size but this is my resting pace to start off

i prefer typeracer because it instilled the harder proper combinations and lesser used keys into my repertoire and as a result the stream of consciousness tests are even easier

I think they just work it out by dividing number of characters by 5, assuming 5 characters per average word or something like that
