Not him but I usually use the rest of my fingers to cover/scratch my nose while the thumb gets in there and quickly does the dirty work if I'm in a situation where evac would be troublesome. It's not gonna hold up under direct scrutiny, but it seems to not catch notice on the periphery of peoples vision like going for gold with your index finger does.

It is a hygene thing. But damn it feels good to remove a boogie just stuck on the walls of your nose. Get them all together then roll them up till they dry a little and let them flake into tiny pieces like dry dust.
