Taking the controls when bodily auto-pilot mechanisms work perfectly fine. Manual breathing is when you are so hyper-worried about air intake that you focus on every breath and can't relinquish control to involuntary systems. Obsessed and anxious people are prone to this stuff. I find myself more prone to it when I oversleep.
