resource curse - lots of land (Africa) to move around in, no winter, lots of food, and comparatively harder agriculture (using ancient methods, not modern) vs. just hunting, fishing, and gathering shit when you needed to eat instead of farming and storing it through the winter. This means you could be lazy and not think/work too hard for your next meal, so could your kids.

Keep in mind, agriculture and writing came to Sub-Saharan Africa thousands of years after the rest of the world. Europe and Asia had much higher populations than SSA for centuries because they were settled and relied on farming, while most of SSA was still tribal on hunting. In addition, the Saharan and Arabian deserts seriously isolated SSA, while Europe spent centuries linked under the Roman Empire, then Christianity. You could find churches with Latin-reading priests (W. Europe) or Greek-reading priests (E. Europe) all across Europe, even in the Dark Ages. Finally, Europe was linked indirectly through the Silk Road across the Islamic world to India and China. Marco Polo (about China and shit) was written around 1275, which is still medieval as fuck. So Europe, China, India, Muslim world were all agricultural civilizations with systems of writing (suggesting "academic" classes such as the clergy, political administrators, and merchants, who all needed to write & count) and at least barely linked together by a thread while Sub-Saharan Africa was largely isolated and had enough resources where people survived without agriculture.

I guess a counterpoint to this would be why South American natives also developed agricultural civilizations (such as the Aztecs, Maya, Inca) when they also had no winter (like Africa), plenty of easy food in the area, and were isolated from Eurasia.
