Are you basing this on supposition? I know of a couple of communes and they aren't like this at all.

Most people can't hack it because the work is physically harder than they thought and being a shiteating deadweight brings social repercussions. If you could get on the wavelength of the people there, i.e. truly understand how slacking would affect the group enough to motivate you into discipline then i'd imagine it's pretty great.

It's just hard work and the majority of people who are attracted to it have never done hard work in their life.
