Being honest here, your description of the average democrat sounds like the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. They were (mostly) realistic, didn't call for a total systemic change over night (but they came close a couple times), tried to ban and censor (see: year old attacks on homosex marriage), pander (see: attempts to soften the blow on homosex marriage disavowment), affirmative action advocates, and the PC party didn't exactly give public healthcare a glowing thumbs up since the last election. You''ll notice though, how much Canadians are all about public healthcare, and how long it's been there.

So, again, I don't see how this dispels the notion that the Harper government, a conservative ("conservative") government in Canada, isn't tantamount to the average democrat in the United States. Both are cancer, but I can't make a decision anyway, since I live in a country where both is done and all parties are in favor of it, only advocating for it in different intensities. Being in favor of lowering the power of establishment politicians means to reduce bureaucracy and regulations overall. Cutting back on one side while creating more on the other through more government funded institutions and redistribution only grows the power of the government and makes it harder to be removed. There is no sane at least somewhat powerful politician in the world who'd willingly give up his power, that's why the only option to reduce government power is to vote people who are fiercly anti establishment, no matter how inexperienced they might be. You see this with the new right in the EU, they hate the establishment, want to roll back on EU regulations and are for direct democracy, which all would be harmful for the government, so they tell the people these parties are fascists, so they can legally persecute people who openly support them. I think the U.S. is facing a cultural shock similar to the one that Japan faced in the 90s - 00s.

At the end of the late 80s, Japan stopped growing. People stopped having children, the GDP stopped growing, nobody's house went up in value, Japanese stocks stopped growing, etc. And it has been largely flat since.

The United States had it's "1990" moment in '07 when the housing market exploded. We will no longer experience the meteoric growth of previous decades. You will not be able to park your retirement into a house that will go up 6% every single year, or in the stock market which will go up 7% year after year. Those days are over.

Now, you will have to work your whole life and save very diligently if you want to retire at the end.

- The hikikomori trend will increase in the U.S.;

- Working men will no longer accept society's bargain (since society no longer holds up its end);

- Birth rates will decline;

- Social mobility will decline;

- The elderly will become a burden;

- The U.S. will (comparatively) lose its limelight on the national stage as other, faster growing countries outpace it;

We do have major cultural differences with the East, though. I think there will be more violence and more civil unrest involved. Also, we have more immigrants.
