Why choose STEM?

I'm starting uni in my European country this fall. I have no idea what I want to study. I'm interested in a lot of things and read about them, but it feels like I'm not interested enough in them to dedicate my life to it.

I just want something that will give me a job that is somewhat exciting and pays well.

I was thinking of doing physics, but I feel like research is the only reason and I don't think I want that, even if physics interests me.

Maybe business/economics? Should I fall for the CS meme? Philosophy and become homeless? Mechanical engineering and build rockets?

What do? I have to pick one. I've already wasted one year being neet.

Im doing my masters in economics in South Africa. If you are going to listen to my advice, take it with a pinch of salt. Economics is pretty cool, especially macro and econometrics. You deal with real life problems that most people dont understand and are quite fun to talk to with others if they do understand. If you do take economics, just make sure you take has much as possible math as possible. I cannot stress this enought m8.

It depends on what your interested in. I would recommend as much real and numerical analysis as possible. If you want to specialize in micro, topology and algebra will be good man. For undergrade, the math is not that necessary, but its really important for post grad stuff. Its really where economics differs itself from other social sciences. Talk to your head of the department or the top researchers in the faculty to find out what really helps or not.

How it works here is you have two placements for 2nd and final year. Most people just stay on with the government agency they work with in the final year placement and get a job that way, however here in the UK there is a lot of demand no matter where you go plus its very secure.
