They're not really blank canvases, it's more that there's enough there for each character to have an individual identity, but beyond that there's room to play.

Plus it's popular, and that means more people get into it, more people see the girls are cute, more people make art, even more people see it. There's also 2hu in every form of media you could want, so it's not like you HAVE to play the games

so anime which is licensed in the US under funimation production company cannot be uploaded to bakabt or nyaa.

however, there's a lot of anime which is not licensed in the US or licensed under aniplex or something which is uploaded to torrent sites
this is NOT because the animation studios (kyoani, trigger, etc) want this to happen, they don't encourage torrenting. The animation studios want us to buy the blu rays or watch it on adult swim or something

it's because they are too incompetent or don't have the funding to hire lawyers in the US to send cease and desist letters to sites like nyaa or bakabt

obviously I don't know shit about this, but there's a big difference between ZUN encouraging the commercialization of touhou and him not being able to stop it. I remember reading about t-shirts with touhou characters being sold at a con that he attended, and the con admins didn't let them sell the shirts at the con, I think he kinda does care about people selling touhou stuff but he just can't stop it effectively
