When has "home" exclusively referred to your parent's house?
I'd refer to the house I live in on my own as my home.

people don't talk like they do on television.
On television you need to convey additional meaning alongside what you're saying, because you are on a timer. For instance OP, you try to convey meaning to an onlooker which isn't relevant for anyone mentioned in the conversation, so it just feels unnatural.
