honestly same
I was by myself for the most during first year, i finaly made a friend during the spring, 2nd year.
This definitely applied to me. It was extra hard as I moved across the country in order to do it (but still go home on holidays). For the first three years or so I didn't have anyone, just friends from back home who I talked to on Skype.
However, I was able to find people I connected with once I stopped limiting myself to my campus. It seems counter intuitive when everyone your age is collected there looking for new friends, but I only found people I was really close to via Meetup groups etc. in the city outside my school. I just wish I would have done it sooner as I'll be graduating soon.
So try to look outside your campus if you haven't already. University can be a great way to find friends but it can also put blinders on you.

Just a question if you don't mind, are groups based around doing an activity or going places a good idea? Like maybe some non-serious light sports or something like chess or whatever? I can't really find any groups at my uni that are for people interested in meeting people, they're mostly and purely about the activity itself.

Are you, yourself, a decent friend? What have you done to meet people?
