So much this. My ultimate fantasy is to make it to med school like the good little azn boy they want, but a school far, far away. Then for residency, go to yet another place far away, even if I have to lie about applying to hospitals near home. The balance of power is shifting in mine and the completely out of touch, ultra-traditionalist faction is gaining strength. They give shitty advice that always backfires if you're dumb enough to try it; and when you succeed by not doing what they suggest they still take credit and claim it's their "traditional" ways that made it work.

My parents, in particular my mom (dad was too passive to care), was always the least traditional and most "free" part of my extended family; my mom was also the most educated of all the relatives. For that matter, things were freer back then for everyone since even if the others were traditional they at least respected your decision to break from tradition.

Then some ultra traditional douche married into the family some years ago, to my aunt. At first people just kind of tried to co-exist with him at family gatherings since he was loud and obnoxious. But he was "traditional" so the elfers approved. Then my dad died, so my mom started becoming closer and closer to them (they never got along before; in fact she used to resent the fact that she had to financially prop all of them up and support them).

Now they're obviously trying to manipulate me into marrying some girl they chose for a family they want to "join" with and so they have more leverage over me so I can "take care of them" after my mom dies. Neither that girl nor I want in. A few years ago they would have been disgusted at the idea of doing this to one another. But now it's OK since "it's for the family" and I need to "repay them" and "show my gratefulness". I just want to go back to the way things used to be.

Threads like these always make me feel really sad. I'm not Asian but have a lot of Asian friends and as a kid I was always jealous of them. Their parents seemed stable, they knew other languages and got to learn instruments, and they never had to worry about food and shelter that much. Meanwhile I was pretty poor and didn't get any of that. However when we grew up I found that they were as miserable if not more so than I was and some of them envied the independence I had been afforded. The grass isn't always greener on the other side and I wish we could all focus on helping out one another instead of shitposting about IQs and interracial relationships and crap like that.
