You could stay at a backpacker hotel, they are like 15 dollars a night. or find a place to stay for free on a couch surfing website.
But once you are here, you have to find a good paying job as soon as possible or you will die on the streets. I live in a city apartment myself, I would say 75% what I make goes to rent alone.

you need to find paying gig asap or its game over. better to start applying for jobs in the city about 1-3 months before moving there. in the meantime you can save up some money for the move.
