Does discord automatically notify the chat if you join? please help

no only if they have a bot that does that

I joined one and I've been sitting there because I'm too anxious to say anything and when I looked at the screen a couple people said hi roughly around the time I came in

it depends on the server. you'll usually see the announcement in the chat as soon as you join. if people don't really say welcome or hi then I wouldn't stick around unless they were busy or all offline.

Well the issue is that I had someone invite me to a discord today in a thread that I made and I got anxious when I got in.

But now it's been too long to just show back up.

Even if there's no bot to announce someone's entry: If only a few people are in the channel, they may be watching the list of active people, and notice when your username is added to the list.
