Well you should do pushups and stuff like that at home. I used to do a lot of pushups and the first time I benched I could do 50 kg for 2 reps. Not exceptional but more than most people can their first time.

Well it doesn't really matter if you can't do a single pushup when you first go to the gym. I knew a guy that couldn't bench the empty bar at first but is benching over 60kg now. There are plenty of people like that at gyms. But, if you can do 20-30 pushups and maybe 5 pullups you should have some decent strength at that point.

If you want some advise try adding some dumbells into your work out.

I found that once I strarted making progress with dumbells I was able to get over the mental barrier by adding 5lbs on every week.
