I get called in (for my supermarket shift) at THE busiest possible times, at the 3rd busiest store in the country, then given absolutely no shifts for the rest of the week because I'm a casual Uni student and they know I'm powerless because the job market is a joke. They also give me 3.5 hr shifts instead of 4 because it means they don't have to give me a break, and they save like $9 on me. They also don't change people on the registers over, until about 30 seconds before their shift ends so that they can get the maximum amount of juice out of someone before they tell them to go home.

I had to pay for my uniform as well, black leather shoes and chinos, as well as the $30 woolworths shirt, all told it cost me about $100 and that's excluding the fact that I already had the appropriate shoes leftover from high school.

You should aim for a job at a library, records department, something like that. You're generally left alone, coworkers are usually quiet, the public you do need to deal with aren't 90% fuckwits like in retail, work can sometimes be interesting. They don't pay great, but neither do supermarkets, fast food chains or whatever else has been mentioned.
