I was in a similar situation. For my 18th I was forced to have a party and a lot of my extended family came over. It was kind of uncomfortable for me. The big difference is I didn't have any friends to invite...

My 21st birthday was the other month and I only had my immediate family and some grandparents come over for dinner and cake and that sucked, too. Best part was leaving the house around midnight to smoke and walk the neighborhood.

I hate birthdays, they are the most contrived thing ever, and I genuinely like it. At one point, my mother called me, but it lasted less than 5 min.
Plus, I hate gifts: I never feel fine about receiving gifts, as I can't forget the monetary side of things, and just end up feeling like shit because someone spent money on something for me and I can't give anything in return because I'm poor.

It was one of the possibilities because I was experiencing severe fevers and vomiting anything I ate.
Apparently my spleen and lymph nodes were experiencing inflammation.
They did a biopsy on me to double check I guess so now I have a few scars in my groin area.
Turns out I was going to be fine and it was a false alarm.
Regardless, really shitty way to spend my birthday.
I was extremely terrified.

I can't remeber my 18th birthday. I grew up with very old parents so getting older wasn't really something we celebrated. I do remember being kind of pissed at my 16th birthday (and later hating myself for thinking so selfishly) because my aunt got murdered that week and the funeral was the day after and nobody cared about my birthday anymore. I spend my 16th birtday fucking up 2 tests at school (french and geography) and sitting alone in my room feeling sorry for myself.
