ITT we rank UK unis based on reputation, entry requirements, location, etc.

I'll start the ball rolling (based mainly on entry requirements, rep amongst school-leavers)

Tier 1: Patrician
>Oxford, Cambridge
Tier 1.5: You're as clever as Oxbridge but no one will admit it
>Imperial College London, LSE
Tier 2: Your Oxbridge interviewer 'just didn't get you'
>St Andrews, Durham, UCL
Tier 3: You went to a private school but weren't smart enough for tier 2 and above (muh Durham college)
>Edinburgh, Bristol, KCL, Warwick, Exeter

>>35859700

You have to understand how rankings work. Rankings are created so that international students can pick the best unis in the world. However most universities have very small international student bodies and most don't care to have a larger amount of them.... So they have really low rankings because they don't give a fuck.

My brother went to an unknown university in an unknown country and then got a do his Ph.D at Oxford anyway.

6 form isn't hard. You just study. There is nothing hard about the exams.

I applied to decent russel group ones. Once I got here I realised I had been memed and that my grades are way higher then the average here.

Very shitty schooling/upbringing. I was expelled when I was 16, ALMOST went full min wage wageslaving but decided to go to college and did very well. I BEElieve in myself much more now.

>>35860235

>Everyone has 4 A* lol. I mean, are you smart or did you just study. It's hard to tell when you just finished 6 form.

Overall in the UK they obviously don't, and even at oxford or cambridge most of them don't, they say on their website the average is 2.7. The very best private schools maybe but even then I doubt it.

>I mean, are you smart or did you just study

I was definitely in the smart category. The difference between me and anyone else was way, way more noticiebable on the "maths challenge" and I got into the olympiad thing.

>>35860261

All the people I know who did decent (I believe they reached the nationals) at that got in Cambridge easily.
>>
>>35860403
Its one of the few subjects I find interesting and my teachers say it leads into a broad range of employment options. Plus If I wanted to do a more academic subject id end up going to a non russel group one.
>>
>>35860456
That's why you pick a subject that you enjoy. I got through an entrance exam and two interviews, pretty sure I'll have a chill time
>>
>>35860448

It's slightly worst than Edinburgh. What did you expect?
>>
>>35860425

I don't know how British unis work but in the Netherlands it's still decently hard to graduate with a high score cum laude or summa cum laude and anyone who does usually gets to go to pretty decent universities for postgrad.

I know a girl who got a 9 average for math and she's going to do her post graduate studies at Cambridge.

So really as long as your current uni does not inflate grades you shouldn't be hurt by not going immediately to Oxbridge.
>>
>>35860482

T-t-thanks. I guess I'll work harder now and maybe go to oxford or cambridge for grad school if I'm lucky.

>deciding what your are going to do for the rest of your life at 16
How does that make any sense? Do you even have any flexibility?

I mean here at the end of high school you can decide to do whatever you want. You can go to uni for engineering, then go to med school, law school etc. Or completely switch your major entirely.

Can someone explain the UK higher education system works?
>>
>>35860393

>>
>>35860581
Significantly more interesting and diverse. I'd recommend the security module, avoid Software Engineering at all costs unless you want ez marks as otherwise they're shit.
>>
>>35860564
You should know what you're good at after sitting your gcse exams. If you suck at maths you're not going to be an engineer. Yeah it's less flexible but nobody really complains. My school let me try out a couple of subjects before I chose my four
>>
>>35860564
There is some flexibility, I mean if you've studied a very standard set of Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, you could go and study medicine, physics and chemistry, as well as maths at a lower tier university (further maths is usually preferred for better universities to study maths), to name but a few subjects. But yes, it sounds less flexible than what you do. We have GCSEs first at school, then A levels at (what we call) college, then a degree at university.
>>
>>35860564
Usually you advised to pick at least 1 science and 1 humanities to ensure you've got the skills to do any subject at uni. The other 2 are entirely up to your skills/ interests.
>>
>>35860648
This. I'm doing English lit, History, politics and philosophy. I could do a law degree or pretty much any humanities subject and uni
>>
>>35860581

>become incredibly aggressive/agitated all the time, skip all my classes, get into fights etc
>got expelled after doing my GCSEs (which I got all Bs on)
>>
>>35860564
you do general subjects up to year 9 (grade 8 equivalent?) then choose GCSE's. You get to specialise a bit more here, but most schools force you to do certain ones like maths, english, a language and geography/history

then after 2 years of gcse's you get to choose 4 or 5 a levels, which you do for 2 years then apply to university
>>
>>35860638

I got a B in GCSE Math and I got a C in A-Levels for Math and now I have a Math degree with a 2.1.

It's all pretty horse shit to be honest. Most of the people who got better exam grades for math were way worst than me at actually doing math. I just had mental issues and couldn't really focus and study.

>>35860673
>>35860698
So how do you get admitted to uni? Are GSCEs the equivalent of the SAT and ACT? Because from what I read here it seems to serve a bit of a different purpose.

Are there any general education requirements to graduate from secondary school?
For reference the graduation requirements in my state (it varies between them) were
>4 years of English
> 1 year of Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II/Trigonometry
>2 years of World, 1 US history, 1 year of economics/government
>1 year of Earth Science, Biology and Chemistry
>1 year of art/music
>1 year of foreign language
>3.5 years of electives, .5 year of health, 2 years PE
In addition to that you had to pass ridiculously easy tests at the end of the year for each subject that were dumbed down so that minorities could pass (they still didn't)
This is the absolute bare minimum a person would need to graduate and doesn't count in the additional classes most would take.

It seems to me that our system has more of a traditional "liberal arts" aspect to it where you are required to take a very broad range of basic courses as a minimum.
>>
>>35861220

>>
>>35859218
that's because our uni is a fucking joke, I'm not going to waste my money there
>>
>>35861307
>So how do you get admitted to uni?
When you start your final year at sixth form / college you go through UCAS. Submit like 10 pages of info including GCSE grades, AS grades and predicted A-level grades, write a personal statement about why you're so great they should accept you.

You get to apply to 5 unis, they give you A-level grade offers (I.E. get these grades or fuck off), you accept 2 of these offers (if you get 2). One is your firm, the other is your insurance.

Your firm typically has higher grade requirements and if your first choice of uni, insurance is your back up if you don't make the grades.
>>
>>35861307

GCSE are done at the end of middle school

You need them to get into a 6-form college which is two years of HS

A-Level are done at the end of 6form and the grades are used to get into different unis.

The system is not based around the idea of classes. You have subjects at both GCSE and A-Level and you just take exams at the end to determine your grade for those subjects.

So there is one big exam period at 16 and one big exam period at 18 that determines all your scholastic progress for the previous years.
>>
>>35861271
As I said, I haven't done my A-levels in the first place.
Anyways, I've gone too far with accounting to just leave it all, and the job opportunities for accountants are quite good.
>>

It can be different here depending on your major. I go to a pretty good IR school so there's a lot of discussions, debates, and "guest lectures" (aka a chance for you to fellate some White House/State Department and pray he gives you a job next year). For those classes, if you don't show up then you're not only screwing over your grade but also your career.

Which is why I love the midterm/final classes. So little pressure. So little social interaction.

You pay nothing back if you never earn over 21,000 pounds, you pay 9% after everything after that. So if you earn 40,000 a year you pay 1710 a year for your loan.

It's weird to me. Your school experience is so different from ours.

Doing STEM, you're basically still stuck with the same experience as 6form, except the material is way harder to get your head around. But all we do is just study, go to lectures, tutorials and do exams.

It's two separate degrees but they share some 10% of the classes. The workload depends on the schedule. Sometimes I have 25 ECTS. One crazy motherfucker scheduled me for 30 ECTS, one semester. The exam periods are the worst though. Sometimes it's 5 exams in four days.

Hey Anon, I failed my AS levels and went to college so was surrounded by kids. Was a year behind my peers but you should use that as drive to get there. Not quite as bad as yourself but i get your feels. Didn't really have friends in college as i did nothing but work.

As far as IT goes, learn some programming in your spare time and build your own computer. Your current subjects won't be great for going into Comp Sci but if you apply for Information Systems or Business IT (ITMB) courses you should get in (with good grades and evidence of interest in tech).

Uni is dope, it's worth the wait, just keep yourself focussed on getting there and you'll be there in no time.
