I really want to try making a game, but the hardest part seems to be starting it. What engine is good for a complete newbie to making games? I don't want to be just a design guy, I want to actually put ideas to use.

I wrote this intro to a short story a couple days ago. I think I'm gonna work on it some more but I'm a busy student and all.

"BBBBRRRRAAAAAAAHHHHH!"

It was Desiigner's Panda. Lucas had set it as his alarm a few weeks back, thinking it was the "hottest fire" he'd heard in the past decade.

"Panda, panda, panda, panda...."

That's the one. For weeks it energized him in the morning, getting him hyped up for the day, regardless of whether he thought the day would be actually good or not. Even if he had stressful tests in his most difficult classes, the alarm never failed to put some pep in his step early in the day. Nevertheless, he turned it off and took his phone from the alarm phone charger.

On this particular morning, however, Desiigner or his classes weren't what Lucas was pondering. As he walked into the bathroom and turned on the dimmable light, he picked up his toothbrush and thought. He'd been in this exact place before. He'd already brushed his teeth, put on his clothes, gone to school, did his extracurriculars, and came home to eat and finally sleep. Normally, this would just be a matter of having done this routine so many times for almost three years now. But it wasn't - this exact day had already happened for Lucas. But here he was - again? As he brushed his teeth, he stepped into his bedroom and checked his watch. Yep, February 7th. But to Lucas it felt - no, he knew for sure that he'd been in this exact time before. This wasn't the first Feburary 7th he'd experienced that year. But something was quite strange about the "previous" February 7th. Lucas couldn't remember it that well, for some reason. But he'd been through it for sure. Too young to be forgetting things, too old not to remember them, he thought to himself. This was the first time a phenomenon like this happened for him, so he was weirded out for sure. Maybe it's a one time thing, he thought.

Stuff happens, whatever. He finished with brushing his teeth, took a quick shower, threw on some clothes, and headed downstairs for some quick breakfast.

His parents were both already at work by this point of the morning, but they usually saved some of their breakfast for Lucas. Bacon and eggs were the selection this morning, a favorite of Lucas'. He ate quickly before grabbing his keys from the counter and heading to the garage to drive to school.

reading over this to myself makes me realize how awful I am at writing, I really need to stop using words so many times in one sentence lmao. maybe i'll work on it some more if you guys think it'd be interesting to read. but i'm no writer, it was just an idea for a story i wanted to work on since i love storytelling. all of this could definitely use some revision and editing

ok, I have no problem doing that. I just want a basic game to start off with, get a feel for some engine to work with.

I have tried unity, but it seems like games made with it are extremely hit or miss. I am thinking of going with Unreal. Wish me luck.

I won't fault you for it, it seems like you're new and you want to grow as a writer, same as me. Morning Routine openings are such a fucking cliche way of introducing your character though, so in the future you should try to introduce them in some other way.

Myself, I'm great at creating opening scenes but I can't attach a story to them. Pic related is something I really want to use, I post it every now and again. It's a fun opening, I cut right to the chase, but I don't know how I want to proceed with it. Flashing back to like a "3 Weeks Earlier" thing is fucking gay, since there's no longer any stake in what's happening. We know the characters will make it to that point, so any perceived danger they're in up to then is pointless.

Ah, I wasn't aware it was so cliche, haha. I guess it was a little too easy to introduce my character like that, so I'll have to consider something else. The main plot of the story has to do with the main character's dreams, though, so a morning routine right after he wakes up from his first strange dream seemed fitting to me at first. I could definitely try other approaches though. At any rate, I appreciate the advice!

I like that you cut to the chase in your story, that's nice. Really draws you in. I think that's really important in stories, I feel like too many try to waste time developing a setting when really I think that should be done after you draw the reader in. Describing the setting isn't the most interesting thing to start out with imo
