It's a pretty good generalisation. I started going on /b/ in around 2007 or 2008 for the lulz, then mostly switched over to r9k 1.0 for the gentlemen shit. Just like the rest of 4chan, I thought reddit was full of normie assholes and I hated the format. When moot binned /r9k/, I cut down on internet as a leisure activity and kept it that way for a couple of years. Over time I've slowly gotten more and more into reddit. It's still full of assholes and sycophants trying to get upvotes, but if you have a particular interest in something niche there's no better place on the internet. Its biggest problem is douchebags whose humour basically boils down to catchphrases and 'holier than thou' types who are all ultra-tolerant of literally any weird shit some douchebag with too much time on their hands says they have. It's easy to ignore all that shit and just frequent subreddits that interest you though.

I still like to come back and read /r9k/ but it's been the same old shit for years now.

That might actually be your average if you count in people from slower boards like /sci/, /biz/, /lit/ and /his/, and people from /fit/. Despite all the brainlets, popsci memers, and people who are sad the work and effort they put in to seem more appealing to women has gone to waste, there are a lot of people on those boards who are successful in life (often in fields related to what people talk about on said boards), but just want a place where they can talk about what interests them as memes, and away from the pressure of college/colleagues/social circles that judge you.
