I'm basically in the same boat, the films are entertaining but nowhere near what i loved about the original series. as far as shinji there were quite a few moments when he's just trying to keep a grip on his sanity and circumstances where i related to him quite a bit. routines, night time thought and the like

Yes. I feel like the core concept of the Hedgehog's Dilemma strikes pretty true for me, though not on a level like Shinji's.

I often find myself interested by depictions of individuality and loneliness in fiction. How people portray it can be very moving.

I also like giant robots.
