Hey /r9k/
I'm a (somewhat) succesful writer that has always been in touch with what you all identify with: loneliness, rejection, and ultimately, no gf and the need for human interaction and acceptance.
I won't reveal my name, but you can ask me whatever you can come up with and I will answer.
I have lurked this site and board for a long time now, and now that I'm drunk as fuck I want to take this to a more intimate level.

So go ahead and shoot, that I will be busy drinking all night.

is self publishing even worth the effort?

Novelist, essayist, or journalist?
>>
>>35631404

I already have; it's a short story about a man looking for an excuse to kill himslef, until it gets to the point he drives far out the hiighway to take a double barell mouthwash when he finds out it is all pointless.

>>35631468
Go for it, most publishing houses won't take your stories/novella/novel unless you have what they call "a body of work", meaning a lot of other stuff they can publish later on when you sell alright and they make a deal with you to gain exclusivbe rights to your work.
In short: if you have something worth publishing, go ahead and do it yourself, look in magazines and other art outlets. Publishing houses won't even bother if you have nothing else to show for.

>>
>>35631371
Hey, OP, I am happy to see you here. Can you answer me this: I am trying to do what you do, and before I started actualy practicing I did things related to writing. One of which was reading contemporary books, I tried fantasy and drama from top lists of Google/Goodreads, I did not like them. When I open Nesbo in bookstore and get through few pages, it doesnt take a grip on me. What i see are just plot devices, author is not working with reader in any way other than offering 'what he thinks will catch me personaly'. I don't want to be cought in Dunning-Kruger spell, so tell me, OP; are the top books really that bleak and barren?
>>
>>35632131

Many people say that teenage years/adulthood will result in all your problems suddenly being figured out, but that is total bullshit. you get your social interaction/gf/friends you are looking forward for in your later years, when you finally get the independece + freedom you're longing for.
I'm assuming you're a young person now, so I would recommend listening to bob dylan while fucked up, but that wouldn't work for everyone. So, whatever insecurity you may feeling now, be assured it will NOT last; meaning, go ask that qt out, go smoke that blunt while blasting your favorite tunes, go do whatever fulfills you, because the loneliness will never go away, but you can make it have some sense.

There are a number of authors out there that may appeal to you, but in my experience, that was Oscar Wilde and his short stories; not because they are "critically acclaimed", but because they spoke to me in a deeply personal level I had never felt before. Especially, The Nightingale and The Rose, Canterville Ghost, The Fisherman and His Soul, etc.
You should five them a try. If the late Victorian 19th Century does't appeal to you, I may suggest you try reading the Hemingway short stories.
Why short stories? Because they maximize the human feelings ina profound level. Try them
Also, The Mysterious Stranger, by Mark Twain. Don't get carried away by what you feel while/after reading them. Try to "get" what you can of those stories. See how deep their themes can get, and how their message can teach you something, if you pay enougb attention.
>>
>>35632280
I'm a college student, planning to enter the medical field. I have "friends" but I don't spend time with them outside of school.

When I drive around to do errands, I end up thinking about all of the what ifs and could've beens. I am social enough, I am fine with meeting new people. I've had my share of relationships I just can't seem to find something meaningful.

I spent my time as a fucking asshole in high school, and I regret it. I guess I finally grew out of it during my senior year but I lost the girl of my dreams. I guess it would've never worked as she was Mormon and I was not.

Do you know how to make a meaningful connection with another person? You talk with someone for a long period of time, you see that spark of potential but it dies out.

I don't know who you are but its 2017, almost nobody has the attention span to read books any more because of the internet and cell phones, and any prolonged indulgence in media would be spent on marathoning TV series, masturbating to porn or playing video games rather than reading. If peoiple want to learn about something nowadays they look up youtube videos to find infotainment that gets right to the point, I guess its a sign of the times that people all across the board have shorter attention spans and though would like to enjoy things like great works of fiction, get quickly bored of things unless they are immediately engaging. Shit, I myself am in this category, and even some interesting 4chan threads I give up on reading because they're so long, only thing I really read are some 4chan threads, blog posts and news stories. Ideally I would like to experience mor eof the great works of fiction and become more /lit/ but to do so I would need to listen to the audio version and on 3x speed, and I never actually do this because free time I do have is spent shitposting, watching TV and masturbating.

How does this make you feel? Also what genre do you write.
>>
>>35632440

I know exactly how you feel. I used to be the same, to some degree; I spent my college days being bitter and thinking I was meant to be alone, never feeling entirely complete or "connected" to people. I may have some regrets, but looking back, I know that it wouldn't have been worth it to change who I am to have friends or aqcuaintaces I would have felt soemhow more comfortable with.
What worked for me, was to get away and travel. Force myself to interact with other kinds of mind, and where people don't recognize me as the sperg i am. I managed to meet a cutie with whom I lost my virginity with, and had some friends that I keep in touch to this day.
Of course, loneliness will still haunt you from time to time, but this happens to every man currently living.
Meaningful connections will happen organically, depending on your current lifestyle and desires; you cannot force them. They will come. It happened to me; before I knew it, I, who thought would die alone and without a single redeeming quality or meaningful relationship, suddenly found myself with a girl that liked me for who I am, and a father of a lovely 2 month old girl.
>>
>>35632607
I grew out of the wanting to be childless phase. I want to meet the girl of my dreams, start a family, and live a quiet life. At the same time I'm attracted to the military as that is the only lifestyle I've known.

I guess I'll grow out of this and move on. Maybe it'll just take time. Hopefully I end up like you.
>>
>>35631371
Hey OP i'll bite...

>How do you balance the fact that you have to "write what you know" and you personal life? do you usually put people you know into your novels, or tell things that actually happened to you in there?
>>
>>35632551

People, especially young ones, are spoiled by TV shows that engage the viewer immediately with high-octane action and cliff-hangers. Literature, on the other hand, stimualtes the intellect and challenges the reader to work out the nuances. People these days don't write, they blog about it. LOL this, LMAO that.
It seems to me that this generation (and every single one that follows, sadly) will go down this path). Who says there can't be men with honor, talking their minds in this society of ours that hinders the emotionally and intellectually curious and strong?

Anyway, it may be the alcohol, it may be the time, but I write mostly fiction. Why? because dreams have molded men since the earth is round. Dreams, and fiction, are the voice of reality: no man can dream of what they do not desire. And I, in a somwehat futile battle against apathy, have taken the painful road of writing as my banner.
>>
>>35632749

In time, you will realize that all men are the same - every singloe human has the same goals and desires as you or yours truly.
You can write about things that you yourslef have not yet lived, but who says someone out there will not like it? After all, it'd be a highlty idealized, romantic, pure versiion of what the reader wants, because he/she knows, that life turns out very differently.
>>
>>35632765
I've always wanted to write, if I'm not mistaken I'm like most people. I can think of fantastical stories that would make a great book but I don't know how to get my ideas onto paper.

There are still youngins who like to read, I'm one of them though I spend a few too many hours reading empty fanfiction fluff online to occupy my free time.

What books would you recommend? Fiction that has that bit of adventure with a romance subplot.
>>
>>35632765
Oh man, this so much. I know many young people and they haven't read any story at all. Especially men, we don't have heroes anymore that carry the ideals of the western world. It's so sad. thanks for trying to make it alive again
>>
>>35632839
My main point is what are some good books? Barnes and Nobles is the only book store left on this God forsaken island and every time I go there I end up buying a couple books buy only reading half of them. I've always prefered fiction and I've been looking for a good romance novel, a little slice of life. Some adventure would be nice too.
>>
>>35632871
what isIand?
>>
>>35632852
As I posted earlier I'm a college student, well I just started. We just need a few good writers and some good marketing to get books back in style. I never really liked eBooks, paperback always felt right.

Translating old legends and epics to modern English or rewriting them for our era could help.
>>
>>35632899
Oahu. We lost I believe three book stores since I moved here as a kid on '05. Barnes and Noble is always filled with hipsters so hopefully they stay in business.
>>
>>35632839

You can never go wrong with the classics, like The Illiad and the Odyssey.
However, greek classic may not appeal to you, so I would recommend, like I've said before Wilde (Complete Short Stories) and some Kafka stories. Read some Borges, too.
If you like novels, contemporar ones, read Huckleberry Finn.
>>
>>35632921
In L.A. the few B&N left are always littered with homeless people, and I wonder how they are staying in business even. Maybe through the sales of niche items like anime/manga, children's books and study materials
>>
>>35633039
As did all kids, I read the Odyssey or at least parts of it in High School English. Though the way it was written made it hard to enjoy, the gist of it was pretty interesting. Maybe I'll try and find an easier version to understand. Thanks though, I'll look out for those books.
>>
>>35631371
how long have you been lurking nigger?
>>
>>35633162
At the B&N at Ala Moana over in town, Weebs flock to the mango section, old folks check out the DVD section, Christian folk are in the the history and religion area, families in the kids area, and hipsters all about though I suspect it's mainly due to this coffee shop in the store.

I like to go in there to look if I can find anything interesting, and I can afford it I buy whatever I find. Shame that books are quite expensive to those with shallow pockets.

Once I asked for 1984 and the Man in the High Castle and before I even finished asking the worker at the help desk if they had it ins stock, this worker came out of no where and handed them to me. That impressed me and sort of surprised me how fast they were able to do that, I hadn't even uttered the word "castle" before the books were in my hand.

I have a little quirk that forces me to constantly be worried about being on time and on schedule. I hate wasting time and not being efficient so I browse for a random book and if I have something in mind, I ask politely.
>>

I forgot to add in my last post, but in large book stores you can't ever seem to find something are searching for.

anon, how do i plot out a whole story? i am good at coming up with plots and premises but sub plots and themes and all that is so complicated and i feel the magic of the idea goes away :(

Ive always wanted to write but the idea is daunting when its time to sit and do it
>>
>>35633405
>constantly be worried about being on time and on schedule. I hate wasting time and not being efficient
Sounds like strong "Type A" neurotic personality. Are you the type of person that hates being NEET and would rather have to wake up to an alarm after 5 hours sleep and be busy the whole day than wake up whenever and have absolutely no responsibilities and nowhere you need to be all day?
>>35633424
Just go to relevant sections and search alphabetically based on author, subject, title or whatever.
>>
>>35633453
I hate idleness but I also dislike what they called "busy work" back in public education, basically meaningless tasks just to take up time. If there's an errand to run, I do it. Hell I even wake up early on weekends just so it seems like I did more that day, if I get out of the house or do something before noon I feel accomplished.

However, I sometimes lack the motivation to do anything, maybe because I am afraid of failing. I'm not too sure, but sometimes I just lay in bed reading or lurking instead of being productive.
>>
>>35633453
I also seem to post before getting all of my thoughts down. I need responsibilities, if I don't have any I create some. I enjoy going out but I just have nothing to do. I'm also apparently an ENTP personality type according to some test I took in a Politics class I had about a year ago.

I'm INTP. Could it be that the fundamental difference between introverts and extroverts is extroverts hate idleness and like responsibility while introverts have responsibility and enjoy spending hours daydreaming and dilly dallying doing much of nothing?

sorry brothers, but this is my last post
i'm too tired and too drunk to keep this thing together

>>35633442
handy tip: whenever you come up with an idea, write it down IMMEDIATELY: use a little piece of paper, computer, tyoewriter, whatever, and just write whatever comes in your kind
You don't have to wirte a story there and then. Hang on to that idea, then keep on writong other ideas until you can come up with something to tie them up together. for example, i uised the song norwegian wood as inspirtation to end a story about a man that burn his lover's house down. then i tied it upo toigether with randome thoughts i had, like a man having breakfast recalling how he met the girl of his dreams, etc.

On failure: don't take it too seriously. just write down whatever you FEEL like writing. If it's good wnough, people will like it, or in any case, you will. don't get carried away by the mainstream idea of success. if you write a sentecne a day, it will be good enough and you are now a writer. keep on with it.

goodbye all, have a nice day/night/whatever the fuck. i love you.

can't wait to read all the roasties trying to get with op by pretending they are decent people in this thread
>>
>>35633621
I don't think so. In my opinion and experience, introverts and extroverts differ more so how they interact with others as opposed to how they face responsibility and activeness.

You can have a loud mouthed idiot in class who'd be fine sitting around doing nothing all day and a quiet individual who would enjoys nothing more than having things to do.

Then again, it works both ways. You can have the quiet folks who don't know how to socialize and stay to themselves and be a NEET yet you can also have a quiet introvert who does his work and fulfills his responsibilities while staying to himself and minding his own business. I don't think there's a single fundamental difference between introverts and extroverts. The introverts I know are quiet due to an insecurity or they simply enjoy the peace and tranquility of silence or have a well developed ability to have humility.

That's a mistake, a big one. Have everything writen down, EVERYTHING you EVER think of or find interesting. Every word, every quote, every sentence you should write down.
