Punk rock in the tume around 1974 to say 1980 was not about that at all. I can mostly speak about the UK, but it was at a time when no one could get jobs, and everyone looked the same. UK bands at the time had very political lyrics, a lot of those antiwar and anti racism. They even had a campaign in 1976 called rock against racism. It was not about being as offensive as possible, it was about sending messages and being different. Punk and ska towards the turn of the decade, like any culture, became commercialized. Record labels would pick up almost any band. Skin heads tried to take over the genre at a time when most punk bands had moved into new wave sounds.

Now you're on to something. There's no group think in Punk, but there are the naive presumptions of people who take aspects of it to heart and miss the bigger picture. I mean, sure, some bands were highly politically charged, but I doubt the average suburban sjw knows who Crass are.
