I'm depressed, and I DO act selfishly - I continually dump my bad feelings on others, fail to clean my apartment and am generally a lot less organised than my roommates, and I often miss or push deadlines and that inconveniences others.

However, I would argue that the depressed person acts selfishly because they are in pain. When I completely derail a conversation from my friend and force them to listen to hours of detailed analysis of my every single failed relationship, it isn't because I mean to be a dick, it's cause I'm hurting.

Would you really accuse someone with a nasty cut on their arm of being "selfish" if they didn't show concern that someone in traffic cut you off?
