So, as a hikikomori myself, I decided to research the condition. I posted my findings in the pic related because the robot thought it was non-ASCII when I tried typing it up in the post.
If you want further readings I'd reccommend Saito, Tamaki, and Jeffrey Angles. "Hikikomori: adolescence without end." (2013).

I've had a read through and I must say, it's an interesting read. Those feelings of hopelessness you spoke of in the introduction were of particular note because it illustrates how the condition is a vicious cycle. One experiences feelings of hopelessness and shame, they are scared to bring this to the public so they reclude even more, exasperating their condition. I'd argue that this would be the reason why it affects males so much more: the stigma around failure with males is much more severe.
