Honestly? I think people would have been more willing to look into the specifics of his acts and justify them as "sticking it to the system," and would have been more likely to chalk up his trolling as "playfulness."

His looking smarmy very much plays into the public's perception of him due to the media narrative. I don't think he'd be nearly as reviled, and he'd have a lot more defenders, but he'd still have drawn heat.
