The anime is good but it doesn't do justice to some of the characters. Tomoyo is much better in the game, for example. There is also a sequel VN to her scenario called Tomoyo After. The Kotomi and Kyou scenarios were also better than in the anime.

You benefit a lot, I think, from being able to see Tomoya's internal monologue. A lot of things make more sense, everything is explained better. It's worth playing IMO. But yes it will take a long time, probably 100 hours or so, depending on how much text you skip.

If you play Tomoyo After without having played Clannad, I'd recommend at least going through the Tomoyo scenario in Clannad first. There is a lot of stuff left out in the anime and there are some differences in the story. It's a lot better in the VN.

It's kind of hard to say, since Lilly was supporting her long before Hisao did and whilst she did change she didn't change much. Plus the second half of the route is basically revolving around Hisao being too scared to touch her and this backfiring on her mentality.

I guess "fixing" her is the wrong term, I'd take an active role in supporting her like Hisao did, but I'd do it consistently unlike Hisao where he dials it back immensely around the second half and do my best to help her when she asks for it or when she's clearly at the end of her tether.

From what I remember it traces back to her parents and her guilt complex, along with her shyness. She doesn't actively hate interaction though, she's just nervous and shy at the start.

Going off Lilly's route we do see that she takes an active role in bettering herself and interacting even though it's hard for her, which I really love as it means she is fine and helps herself even if Hisao doesn't go onto her route.
