lorewise you have to study for countless years to become a good mage. The workload required to even become just an okay mage would likely be equivalent to the workload required to become a surgeon. On top of that, some savant could learn everything you did in half the time and would be able to wreck entire armies. Also on top of that, magic is much less useful lore wise, magic greatly exhausts people, even casting a few complicated spells could burn you out for weeks.

Lorewise, the light sucks, druidic magic takes decades to attune to, shamanism is fickle and requires great investment, void magic is mind ruining

Becoming a warlock is by far the quickest path to power, however it almost always ends up biting you back.

there's a reason why most grunts just stick to being warriors, becoming a decent caster of any kind requires amazing talent, time investment beyond human lifespans or sacrifice, and if you do then decide to become a lowly warrior then you'll likely be crushed by a mage anyway.

Even as a high-level autistic neckbeard that has played hundreds of gaems, I'm honestly, truly hard-pressed to think of a single one that wouldn't become an existential nightmare in mere weeks.

In theory, this would feel the least restrictive, as you'd still get to roam around freely, but you're only yourself, not some immortal, all-powerful adventurer with an infinitely huge backpack... At best you could fight off some low-level creatures/people, most likely you'd get randomly killed within a few days by whatever mid-level enemy the game has that roams anywhere near you. You basically have to choose between living exclusively in the starting area until you die of natural causes, or venturing outwards, and getting killed violently.

Why would you do this? You aren't going to be an Adept in Mass Effect, or the Nerevarine in Morrowind. You're just gonna be a nobody. You're dead, kiddo. Also, following OP's strict rules, you wouldn't actually get to experience all of Tamriel/Earth/Wherever, only the areas the PLAYER can access. Think about how little of the world is actually available to roam around in during gameplay. Do you want to be stuck in those places forever?

These games take place in maybe 25-50ish static sets that don't change. In many games, they're literally just tracks or backgrounds. This would absolutely be the most horrible and terrifying one to choose. Imagine only being able to live inside of the school in your average Japanese VN, with nothing but an empty void beyond. FUCK that.

All that said, I think the least depressing/horrible would be an MMO... Something like Everquest or WoW has been around long enough for the world to be acceptably huge thanks to expansion content, detailed, and safe in some areas, and rife with (mostly) good-hearted adventurers to protect you, and plenty to do. Also, hot non-human girls.
