I want to buy a bike to ride around the city.
What kind should I get?
>>
A bike,
>>
A folding one with smaller wheels.
It'll come in handy
>>
If you're using it for recreating/fun, I recommend a hybrid bike. If you're using it as your main mode of travel, though, get a commuter bike. It'll come in handy.

Do NOT get a cruiser. The resistance is way too severe and it makes riding even a mile kind of a bitch unless you're on even, clear, perfect roads.
>>
Since we're already in a bike thread, I have a question.

Bike fenders: What are they and do they generally help or hurt?
>>
Raleigh Cadent 3 or 4.

Use corp site for discount. Do it.
>>
>>35448711
I just recently got my first bike and decided fenders would be a good idea. Not only do they add to the aesthetics of the bike it helps keeps you clean, the bike clean and the people riding behind you clean as well.

What kind of bike you got anon?
>>
>>35448920
None yet. I'm seriously considering getting a bike instead of a car, though. I don't really need a car right now.

I'm just wondering what to get, and since this thread came along I just thought it would be a good idea to piggyback off it.
>>
>>35448711
Fenders protect your body and your bike from water and mud. The water that's left on the ground has lots of dirt in it and is just gross, you don't want that splashing up on you or on your bike's gears or bearings.

The only disadvantages is they make you slightly slower (not a big deal unless you're a semi-pro racer) and they're hard to install (get the bike shop to do it).

Come visit /n/ you guys

>>
>>35450902
don't get the try-hard bike OP.
>>
How do you ride a bike?
I've never owned one.
>>
Buying a bike from Walmart: yah or nah?
>>
>>35450902
>seat higher than the handles
yuck

>>35450979
It's one of those things where in order to teach you, I have to actually be there. It's fairly simple, though. You just mount the seat, push off with one leg and keep pedalling. The faster you're moving, the easier it is to keep balance.

Yeah if it's a single speed beach cruiser and you're paying less than a hundred bucks for it and aren't going to be riding it up and down steep hills or more than a few miles at a time.

Nah otherwise.

Btw if you're taking it down ANY hills you're going to want to install a front brake if the bike doesn't have one. A rear brake alone doesn't provide enough stopping power unless you're on totally level ground.
>>
>>35450986
you're much better off getting a used 10 speed from Craigslist
>>
>>35450986

>Buying a bike from Walmart: yah or nah?

nah
>>
>>35451092

Not necessarily. It depends on what kind of riding he plans on doing, the market in his area, and a lot of other factors.

Wal-Mart sucks as a corporation but they offer some great single-speed bikes at very low prices.

Even their single-speed road bikes might be okay (never owned one). But there's very little to go wrong on a single speed as long as the brakes are adjusted and the chain and cogs are in good shape.

I owned the beach cruiser I posted in >>35451068 . Cost me less than $100. My local craigslist didn't have anything near as good for a comparable price.

Depends on the landscape of the city yr in anon!

For city riding a 10-speed hybrid/road bike (not racing bike tho) with a decent steel or aluminum frame is a great choice. Usually you can find tons of these on Craigslist.

Just make sure you size it properly; biggest mistake I see new bike purchasers make. If you're interested I can post some resources for sizing your bike to your body.
>>
>>35451343
I'm 5'10". Average build. Size me up, senpai
>>
>>35451440
Thats not how it works
Go to a bike store with your bike and they'll help
>>
No suspension
Tires between 1" to 2" depending on preference for speed/comfort
Full mudguards are essential
Chain guard is highly recommended
Luggage rack is essential (carrying heavy stuff in a backpack is very uncomfortable)
Flat or drop bars doesn't matter, pick whichever you prefer
Hub gears are recommended. 3 gears are sufficient for flat areas, you'll want more if you have hills.
Hub dynamo is recommended
>>
Reminder that steel is real
>>
>>35451478
Steel frame with no suspension can be good. And suspension is just useless weight for city riding and steel has some flex already.
>>
>>35451343
>Just make sure you size it properly
Very important. Even small changes in fit can make a big difference to comfort. I raised my saddle 10mm above normal height once to see what it was like and my knees hurt after a long ride. Put it back to normal height and no more knee pain.
>>
>>35447981
Try and get one with 2 wheels
>>
>>35451283

for riding in traffic? no.
>>
>>35451687
Are you implying I'd ever want to ride in traffic? I got it for neighborhood riding and paved/dirt trails. Just wanted it for fun and exercise.

I don't get the point of these fancy aero frames if you're not competing in UCI events. The technology isn't optimized for speed, it's optimized for exploiting loopholes in artificial rules. Get a recumbent instead, or a fairing for a normal bike.

You own a fairing?

No. I don't actually care about going fast. But if I did I would not follow rules for pros.

Here's a nice chart for road bike sizing:
http://www.ebicycles.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/ebicycles-bicycle-sizing-chart-road-bikes.pdf

Again yr definitely going to want to check out the bike in person and if possible ask peeps at the bike shop (do not buy from Walmart, buy from a specialist) as every bike is going to feel different and have different quirks.

I'd definitely recommend a bike if you can. Cars get expensive fast between oil changes, gas, maintenance, taxes etc. I'm considering ditching my car for a bike, though my job is like 10 miles away which might be too far to ride.
>>
>>35453427
I mean as long as it's not a crack or hole you should be ok, you only really need to worry about things that might compromise the frame's integrity. If it still bothers you after a while... repaint it yo, kinda hard but rewarding
