Slaves are too expensive and time-consuming. When you own slaves you have to take care of all sorts of things like housing them, clothing them, feeding them, keeping them healthy.
It's better to just "employ" them for the time you need them, then throw them a few scraps and tell them to sort out their own living arrangements. Make sure to remind them that they are expendable.
