there's your problem OP. Long story short: stop being a faggot and learn scales, then do scales fast.
the alternative is to just learn guitar riffs for months. https://www youtube.com/watch?v=xiC__IjCa2s
<- this vid has a whole bunch, with a link to all the tabs (if you can't read tabs then learn, cunt)
Don't learn riffs or covers, that's bullshit. Just fuck around until you come to a roadblock, and look up the specific thing you want to do. Those online guitar courses are great if you want to sound like every other generic guitar player. You gotta be prepared for a lot of practice though.

Learn Nu-Metal. Like Disturbed, Rob Zombie, or Linkin Park. Songs by these artists are really easy but sound cool.
Or if your not into metal learn Nirvana, AC/DC, or Foo Fighters. Songs by these artists are also very easy but sound cool.
The thing is to learn cool sounding but easy tunes to keep you interested. As far as scales go, for most rock tunes just learn the pentatonic minor scale aka "the blues box". It's an easy scale but sounds cool, it's very commonly used as well.
But just start off with rhythm parts and don't worry about solos at first.

Just practice riffs for an hour a day and you'll be mashing out Slayer before you know it.
