The market I'm now an expert in is completely oversaturated in Japan, however I can work for my current company from wherever I want (and our market has been barely reached by Japan, so we're pretty free to do whatever we want here)

that might be a good reason not to go there, being social is extremely important in an everyday life in Japan, especially when you are a foreigner. I know some schools offer travels for a couple of months only, a friend of mine went there for two months, so you could see how well it goes and if you're ready or not to go there longer.

Ah I see, well there are schools in Japan made for foreigners where you can have intense training on a couple of weeks, and as they begin their school year in April, you could spend a couple of months learning and interacting with people in order to sharpen your knowledge of the Japanese language. Also, knowing already a bit of Japanese is already a big plus.
Also, the big trap is courses for foreigner students generally are in English, with all the foreigners being together. People then tend to stay in their foreigner community and not trying to communicate with the rest of Japan.
My friend I mentioned earlier had a worse level than mine when he left for Japan, and in two months he learnt enough to hold a conversation, at the cost of avoiding at all costs this foreigner community.

i sid a term abroad in japan and there was 1 nigger with us. Everyone acted unsettled around him and avoided constantly even after getting to know him.
They'd avoid white people too but once they knew you could speak japanese it was ok and they would be happy to talk to you (i felt like people wanted to talk to me which i had never felt before). The nigger said he didnt notice which might be why they didnt like him (i dont think he grasped the nuance of interaction in japan) and its only 1 example but one of the nips even asked me if i though nigger was a little brash (implying a lot more)

i wouldnt say im an expert and its one of those less explicit things. People hedge a lot and dance around the subject. Its hard to explain but you notice if you pay attention. Everything from body language to tone conveys a lot more imo and its harder to notice coming from where i do where people are blunt and crass.

I'd suggest working through Genki I & II and the related workbooks (look into using Anki with them; it's up to you to find an Anki method that works for you). If possible, I'd also suggest getting some shadowing materials, and spending at least 10 minutes daily shadowing after you get roughly half-way through Genki I.

If you can't afford Genki, I'd suggest seeing if you can find a copy somewhere online. For learning Japanese from English, Genki is well-regarded for good reason.

I'm of the belief that having a physical copy of a book is valuable. Since you'll be spending plenty of hours studying from it, it's worth the cost to have it in hand.

Shadowing is a method of speech practice where you listen to an audio recording while imitating it with your own voice simultaneously. Of course you might be a second later than the actual recording, but it gets you used to pace and other linguistic features of the spoken language. As you tend to repeat the same content over and over again (in order to better one's imitation), you'll get accustomed to patterns and will commit both grammar and vocabulary to memory. The benefits to *listening comprehension* are huge. You can shadow any material, but as a beginner it's best to stick to things that have a script you can read from.

It's been an on and off process.

Sometimes I'll be playing a game, reading a novel, listening to a podcast and feel like "wow, I understood all of that" only to have something else come later in the day that has me disheartened in my lack of ability.

The feelings of being baffled by Japanese are rare for me lately, but I can't identify a period in my study overall where I felt like "I got it at last!" It's ben more of a constant push-pull of "I got this" and "Wow I've got a long way to go"

It's been a while since I've had to translate in my head though; i.e., I understand Japanese as Japanese, and an un-understandable sentence in Japanese is similar to hearing an English sentence with too-much slang or jargon I don't know.

I apologize if that was an entirely unsatisfactory answer. I think if you're able to spend a couple months with at least a few hours of Japanese input (either by living in Japan, or pursuing your hobbies in Japanese), you'll start understanding Japanese in a more natural sense.
