I am eighteen.

I am male.

I live in Leicester, for now.

I'm a student.

I used to play a lot since I was 3, really slowed down since I got to 15 - PS3 broke, I'll be using my student account to buy a PS4 because I'm a degenerate.

I live with my girlfriend but I don't know if I love her anymore.

My relationship with my parents is very good but I feel like my Dad doesn't understand me, we get on well, he's just emotionally detached.

They raised me well, I was left to my own devices, let to go along with my hobbies, they always gave me advice but never forced me to do what they had in mind.

Sometimes I'm 2, 3. Sometimes 6, 7. I know you might say, hey, wow you have a good relationship with your parents, have a gf and are at uni, it's all good for me?

Nah.

I'm not that materialistic.

Who honestly doesn't? Even my 60 yo mom plays casual games

I'd say 1-2h every day, but sometimes goes up to 8-10 when I have nothing to do in the day.

>What is your relationship like with your parents?
Pretty good actually, they are very accepting of me, and very supportive even though they have no good reason to be.
>Did they raise you well, take interest in your education/hobbies and push you to success?
They are financially helping me right now, and are willing to keep doing so. They also often encourage me to do things, but it doesn't influence me that much.
>How happy are you on a scale of 1 to 10?
It swings a lot. Actually, I've been diagnosed (by a real doctor) with depression and mood disorders. It often swings wildly: from 2-3 to almost euphoric states at 9, where I can't stop from smiling. It's not great, but I don't mind.

My father was a philandering conman who ripped off virtually everyone in my family. My mother was a slobbering drunk. They straightened themselves out before they died.
Weirdly, they did a fair job of raising me with their advice boiling down to 'see what we're doing? Do the opposite and save yourself'.

OP here. I actually made it because I wanted to know more about anons lives in relation to their video game experience and how their parents raised them. Mainly because I blame my NEETdom on my parents for not instilling discipline in terms of success and education, instead just buying me video games and allowing me almost totally unrestricted playtime at the detriment to my social development and future prospects.

I'm fighting my way out of this now at 25, and from much introspection and observing 2 different family's (family friend and my cousin's family) whose children were not given unrestricted access to video games (my cousin's don't even have them at all) and were instead raised from a young age with outdoor hobbies and educational discipline I have came to the conclusion that video games are a total fucking cancer and have almost ruined me as a person.

If I somehow manage to procreate then my children will have no video games whatsoever.

I think you're a little off here.

I had unrestricted access to video games, but I don't attribute that to my lack of success in the slightest. Socially I turned out fine, academically my issues were an intense love for procrastination and a hatred for homework.

Parenting isn't as black and white as that, anon. PE was actually one of my favorite classes, because playing sports and being active beat the hell out of doing fucking homework.

If anything, I turned out the way I am due to my own complacency and my parents only method of pushing me to do things was to threaten me if I didn't. Maybe if they encouraged me every once in awhile instead of berating me and beating me I would've been more successful.

But hey, not like it really matters anymore anyway.

>Socially I turned out fine
I'm great socially now, only through my own efforts after realised how much of a social autist I was. I was barely ever allowed outside to play because my mum was scared of letting me out at night, so I missed being able to build true friendships. The only method of socialising I had was online video games, the online part I finally got at 15.

>academically my issues were an intense love for procrastination and a hatred for homework
Yeah that sums me up too. The thing is, the only thing that made me actually do homework was the threat of detention and it then coming back to my parents. If any work had that level of threat attached to it then I'd do it no problem, anything else and it just wouldn't get done, I'd rather just immerse myself in video games. So if school and teachers could instill that kind of discipline in me, why couldn't parents complete the job and instill home discipline? They didn't ask about my homework, didn't ask anything besides "was school okay?" The only time they took an interest was during parents evening because any bad news then reflected bad on their parenting. Aside from that my education was left completely in my own hands, when all I wanted to do was get home as soon as the bell rang so I could play video games and pretend I wasn't a social loser, success and a career wasn't even on my radar.

>But hey, not like it really matters anymore anyway.
True that anon, I just like trying to understand how this mess happened. I really don't like playing the blame game with my mum as she is lovely, but she's also a massive enabler. My dad was almost totally absent until my parents split up so I think a lot of this rests on his shoulders.

Maybe try looking at what else was going on at the time, though? I was similar, I only did homework because I was threatened. But having no video games wouldn't have made a difference.
If I wasn't playing video games, I was watch TV. If I wasn't watching TV, I was reading a book. If I wasn't reading a book, I was out with my friends doing dumb shit.

My parents tried to discipline me, but I didn't care. I just disobeyed them, because I fucking hated homework.
But I also had a very shitty home life regardless. I was the youngest of 2. But my parents weren't ready for a second kid, and really couldn't support me. So because my sister was older, I got shafted in absolutely everything.

I slept on the floor or a couch for the first ~17 years of my life because our shitty house only had 2 bedrooms, and my mother and sister sure as shit weren't going to sleep on the floor.

I'm not really here to give you my lifes story, but like I said, it isn't that black and white. My childhood would've been hell if I didn't have the escapism video games gave me. Multiple things contributed to us turning out like this, man. And as children, it was out of our control.

Don't beat yourself up too much about it, Anon.

No. Education wise, she just cared about me coming out of fancy expensive schools, even if that meant coming out with a shitty grade. She doesn't care about my education, just about me having the stupid certificates. She only cares that I breeze through life following the stupid study-work-die protocol. She wants me to study tourism. I hate that.
