There needs to be an updated and revised version of the "social contract" written. Society has progressed beyond the point of simple bloodshed to now killing a man's character or social stigmatisation being sufficient or equivalent to what murder what force would accomplish in Rousseau's day. As such society's interactions and methods have become more psychological and insidious.

I'll admit I don't have the intelligence to write out a full thesis on the subject but I'd read one if it was well written.

A social contract for the modern era.

I enjoyed Animal farm.

It's a little strange that he assumes every single thing that the party does is automatically evil and wrong. Too contrarian. Perhaps that's just his sheltered perspective having lived almost entirely in their reign.

>Orwell
>Sheltered

Pick one.
He was shot in the throat fighting in the Spanish civil war for the pro-socialist forces. Whilst recovering he wrote "Homage to Catalonia."

Although he was a socialist he was an anti-authoritarian and hated all authoritarian regimes regardless of whether they marched with jackboots or under a red banner.

Animal farm was written as a warning to those who sought to whitewash or glorify the soviet union simply because they were now "allies" after the defeat of nazism. A warning to leftists who wanted to emulate them and to right-wingers who were now pacifying them and avoiding debate.

A comparable book today could be written about Saudi Arabia or Israel.
>>
I'm going to read Catch 22
>>
>>35353456

Example?
Pick out an autist paragraph for the lols.
>>
>>35353523
I mean the main character is sheltered. The life or circumstances of the author shouldn't matter at all. The book should stand on its own merit.

But I'll assume you're saying he's poured a lot of his close personal beliefs into the main character.

>>
I just finished Trainspotting and I'm gonna start Ulysses soon but currently feeling too shit to sit and read.
>>
>>35353600

Nah my mistake, I assumed you were commenting on the author and not the main character, but yeah I would say Animal Farm is the most "transparent" of Orwells works. There's no ambiguousness to the motivation or morality of the characters. And perhaps there shouldn't be. Apart from being a historical analogy, it's also presented in the style of a classic children's fable. Neither style of writing is favor to delving into their characters emotions or inner dialogue. It's left to the reader to extrapolate.

Good Morning, Midnight - Lily Brooks-Dalton

Without spoiling anything significant, it seems to be about loneliness. A man dedicated to his work refuses to leave an arctic research facility when someone unknown event requires its evacuation, and he's left utterly alone. With the world seemingly ended by some unknown catastrophe, he needs to come to terms with the sort of life he's lived, his achievements, his sacrifices, etc. The appearance of a little girl - apparently missed by the evacuation teams - radically changes his perspective.

Similarly, a group of astronauts returning from Jupiter undergo the same reflection, aware that they'll be returning to an empty planet.

It's a nice book.
>>
>>35352736
>Rousseau
I don't like him but he wasn't that wrong on education. His Emile proposal sounds like it would probably work but it's not practical. Ivan Illych is the answer. And of course education is the only relevant question.

Same. I wish they had have cut back on the hallucinations. It's never revealed in the film what illness he has but it's strongly implied it's borderline personality disorder, although theyou added the hallucinations for creative effect.

I have BPD. The scene with him watching old home movies and on the stairs killed me. Got a flashback to near exact the same scenarios.
>>
>>35354322
Yeah, same. It is definitely BPD, but bear in mind also that DID is often co-morbid with BPD. DID is less its own thing than it is a specialisation path for BPD, and I could relate to it a lot. His female persona was really what fucked with me most I think. Too relatable. Re: hallucinations, some BPD people get those. I think if I was going to try and explain my condition (?) to someone that film would be a good place to start. Better than Misery which is unfair, and Girl, Interrupted doesn't really give the full picture though it is in part relatable.

I said it before but let's have a look at Norway or any of the countries that got it right.

Ranked Number 1 globally in:

OECD Better Life Index, the Index of Public Integrity, and the Democracy Index. Reporters Without Borders have also ranked Norway as the country in the world with the highest amount of press freedom.

Universal Healthcare, a comprehensive social security system, and has the 4th highest GDP of any country on earth.

All opinions are equally stupid.

Nobody is capable of seeing objective reality.

We're all just viewing it through our own filter of perception.

Some people have a black and white filter, some people have an old timey sepia filter, some people have fucking dog noses and ears, some people are just viewing normally thru a screen but NOBODY sees the real thing.

Seeing the real is impossible.

The crazy guy's crazy opinions are just as valid as the perfectly sane guy's because they are both equally wrong.

It's hard to explain this concept to plebs.

No I can understand it. It's just not advanced. In fact it's not even worthy of debate that's how broad it is.

It would be like holding a debate on "giving medicine" in a medical forum.
It's too broad, it's been done to death and it shows how little you know that you'd bring it up and consider it "advanced knowledge."

It is about the Ukrainian Euromaiden Revolution and the subsequent conflicts in the Donbas and Crimea, and the history of Ukraine which lead up to these events.

It's probably the best book out there if you know very little about the 2013 revolution and just want to inform yourself.

It is mostly impartial, but is somewhat Russian sympathetic (the author states that there is a kind of unanimous agreement by the west about their position on Ukraine and he tries to balance that out with a view of the conflict from a Russian perspective as well as a western one).

Would really recommend it. It is by no way a completely comprehensive history of the situation in Ukraine, but it is a fantastic start.
