it's called Banished
a comfy and neat little medieval-ish city builder game centered around survival.
Be warned though, this game is fucking brutal and unforgiving. Expand to quick, you die, expand too slowly, you die, don't harvest before winter, you die, harvest too soon before winter, you die.

The learning curve isn't necessarily steep, in like one or two games you'll have a basic idea of what to do and how to be successful and you'll finally see why this is the comfiest game ever,
The music, the little workers walking around doing shit, watching your people grow, work, and die old, have kids, socialize, etc...
it's just so amazing.

I like space engineers. Nothing quite like building a cosy medium-sized spaceship and walking along the corridors of it. Knowing you built it all and it's your refuge from the cold void of space.

Building a hidden base in an asteroid is also spectacularly comfy.

But you can hit truly fantastic comfy levels when you build a nice little spaceship that can be flown inside the hangar bay of a bigger spaceship that can then be landed inside the massive hangar bay of your asteroid base. Comfy within comfy.

Can't get the hang of planets, though. Not enough resources around to get started on anything good.

The village grows, but not horizontally. The houses upgrade to stone which is no different in capacity but has better insulation so it uses less firewood/coal to heat, and doesn't catch fire as easily.

Actually there's not much in the way of building upgrades or advancement. You can build everything right away, it just depends on what materials you have access to.

You can expand your village as far and wide as you like. You can try to take up as much of the map as you want. It gets increasingly difficult to feed and house your people. Mostly because old people take up all the best houses and don't do any work. And young people won't reproduce until they have their own house. So, you need to keep building new houses or the elderly will literally cockblock your village to death.

No goal. Just keep going as long as you can/want.

I still play it. There are tons of translations, mods, new buildings...

This game still has so much potential to be even better. Adding micromanagement for families, new catastrophic events, new types of houses and habitations, new landscapes, would make it an absolute must have.

I dream about a castle mod with the objective of making your little village into a safe haven against a horde of barbarians or something.

You will love it.
There are several strategies at first, the best one is to build a gatherer's hut + hunter's hut + forester lodge + herborist hut + a barn + a little stockpile all at the same place away from your village location. This will allow your dedicated workers to gather more food and materials faster. Then build a fishing hut with a barn next to it. Then the wood cutter lodge, and most importantly, a school. Later, a market engulfing as much production facilities as possible.
Then you'll be set for having a prosperous village and build the rest of the buildings you need.
