How many people do you think huge near-unrealistic dreams? I mean wanting to be musician, starting a big business, being a major writer, etc.? How many people just grow out of these when they're kids and just pick a profession to stick to until they retire?

I'd say my goals (which might as well be dreams as a different word) aren't that realistic. Basically I want to own land in Alaska. I wanted to be an astronaut for ages but I realized that the selection process is pretty intense and that my eyesight wouldn't be accepted even though I can just get PRK surgery or whatever in the military to fix it. So I just want to chill up in Alaska, take a trip or two somewhere every year, and basically live out my life there.

Sorry, meant to say "unrealistic". Fucking autocorrect bullshit.

I think having unrealistic dreams are for kids and that anyone pursuing such a dream at an adult age is merely deluded.

Society is set up so that only the rich or the connected achieve greatness. Want to be in charge of a huge conglomerate corporation? You need money. Want to be a musician. You need connections. Want to be a major writer? You need connections. You need to be an exceptional person in the first place before you can achieve anything "near-unrealistic" as you put it. Most people aren't exceptional - most are average at best and thats why people will never succeed if they "dream big".

Also there is great risk involved with having these expectations. Say you raise the money to start a business. Say you convince venture capitalists to invest in your company, or a bank to lend you a sizeable loan. What if you company fails? You're economically ruined and in this society money = freedom. You'd basically be giving up your freedom for the rest of your life if you fail. What about if you wanted to be, say, a major author? You spend your time going to college, getting a degree which is suited to that goal and you end up wasting your years there because what that matters is (1) who you know not what you know (2) how well you can write. Anyone who graduates college can write well enough with enough practice. Also, because most people are average, they can't really write well enough to gain the proper attention. So really, in the long run, its the connections that you'll need and that you'll lack. Thinking as an adult, dreaming big is just too risky when you're putting your future in jeopardy in accordance with the above examples.

Sure, its great propaganda that one can be anything they want when they grow up. But, in the long run, the super majority of us average, non-rich, unconnected people need stability and stability is really the only viable path through life.
