Yes
>What religion are you?
I'm Presbyterian.
>How did you come to it?
I just had faith one day and have believed in God ever since

I'm an atheist.

Christian here, honestly the comfiest religion
>>
Christian. I'm not really sure how I became Christian. My dad spoke of God when I was young and I went to a Catholic school but I never really adhered to it at the time and that's not what made me Christian.

I think what got me is scripture reading in both catholic and public schools. When life started getting harder as I became a teenager, I started reading the bible as a last resort. The struggle that every prophet and disciple and Jesus himself took in life and their approach to life inspired me to keep going and live my life a different way.

>>35331564
whats a good bible to read or listen to that has a more modern english language to it, i can't get into any of the thou and thy stuff
>>
>>35331564
Is it odd that I'm a devout Christian even if my family aren't? My family never went to church and they never supported any faith and now that I've found mine they frequently insult me. Both my parents are from Christian upbringings but decided to forsake God.

Get an NIV to start. It's the standard. Move on to having a small collection of translations if you find yourself wanting to truly study the Bible.

>>35331610
I use the Good News Bible. It has a more modern practical translation and is even more interesting if you buy one with the deuterocanonicals and Apocrypha which is extra biblical and hard to find.
>>35331633
Sometimes I like to think Jesus chooses us.
>>

Catholic. Was born into it: went to church every Sunday, mom put me in church school. I had always sort of believed, but in a daoist God who doesn't care about us. That changed, when I heard of the times when the bread & wine turned into actual literal body & blood. Modern scientists studied them, and found that the body was muscular heart tissue, and the blood is AB type.

Needless to say, I was moved by this, and really started to believe. Gonna get confirmed this year.
>>
I'm Jewish but deep down I'm an atheist. I present myself as Jewish though since modern atheism is fucking gay.
>>

>Are any of spiritual/religious?

I'm an Asatruar

I started studying ancient European religions and Asatru spoke to me.
>>

>when I heard of the times when the bread & wine turned into actual literal body & blood

he fell for the transubstantiation meme

>Modern scientists studied them, and found that

no they didn't, transubstantiation isn't real. literally prove to me that crackers turn into human meat and a $7 bottle of wine turns into human blood. this is not science. I believe that you should be free to worship whomever you want, but don't be retarded.
no catholic I know believes this.
>>
>>35331808
>Asatruar
Wow look at me. I'm such a contrarian. I'm so cool for following this ancient religion. I'm just like the vikings guys. Please notice me.
>>

I am Catholic
I converted
>>
>>35331854
What did you convert from?
>>
>>35331840
I only talk about it online. It's not something I display or talk to others about in real life. Unlike Christcucks, who constantly try to "preach the gospel."
>>
>>35331833
I'm Catholic.
I firmly believe in transubstantiation
Every Catholic I know does, too
>>
>>35331808
are you a white supremacist too?
>>
>>35331890
But it's not real so why do you believe it?
It's just saltines and grape juice. it cannot, absolutely cannot turn into anything else. It is a scientific impossibility.
My partner's family is catholic (the only catholics I know), they do not believe in transubstantiation. They are highly suspicious of anybody who takes the gospel that literally because they're bound to do something fucking psycho.
>>
I was baptized and sent to Sunday school as a nominal Catholic, but I never believed any of that shit. So I've been an atheist for most of my life.
>>
>>35331900
No, I don't consider myself a white supremacist. There are many good qualities that the white race has, but the same can be said for most other races as well. I do not believe in interbreeding and I would prefer if every race lived in their ancestral homelands. That is not possible right now, however.
>>
>>35331867
Atheist.
OK, full story
>Grew up in the buckle of the bible belt surrounded by Baptists. Dragged to church a few times.

>Military intelligence; middle eastern specialist. Studied Islam academically.
>"That shit is fucked up"
>Get out, study Judaism in college (to get a job as a middle eastern analyst with the CIA or something)
>"That's interesting, but I am not a Jew"
>Going to a Catholic university, have to take a Catholic theology class
>Huh. Take another one.
>OK, take another one
>Convert
When I learned what Catholic theology really teaches, it looks like what I see when I am out in Real Life.

Most of the time.

it could be true but there's no publishings on it so I'm going to still disbelieve it until I have more proof.

who /zen here?
What do?
>>
I wish I had spirituality in my life. All I have is a delusion that god sent angels to me and gave me the perfect moral compass.
This does nothing but makes me want to argue with people who think that they are more moral than me because I can't comprehend a flaw in mine, y'see.
then when people argue with me, as they inevitably do because everybody thinks their morals are correct, it solidifies in my mind that it is a test from god and that I have to preach to the people, which leads to more arguments.

Sure it is.

unleavened bread and wine.
>My partner's family is catholic
So not practicing, then, so not really Catholic
>I do love that you know one lapsed family and still stated 'No Catholic I know...'
Let's walk you through this simply.
Ever see a wooden chair? Are all chairs made of wood? No.
Chairs can be tall, short, wood, plastic, metal, etc. Right?
All of those variables (color, material, etc.) are called "accidents" as opposed to the "substance" of being a Chair. If I take an axe to a chair it remains wood, or metal, or plastic but ceases to be a chair once I chop it up - then it is debris.
OK so far?
Transubstantiation is the theological statement that at the moment of Consecration the accidents of the Eucharist do not (usually) change but the substance *does*. It still looks, taste, etc. like beard and wine but its essence is different.
>...it cannot, absolutely cannot turn into anything else. It is a scientific impossibility.
Go look up half-life and particle decay and get back to me, ok?

>half-life and particle decay
half-life and particle decay can't turn bread into flesh. they do not turn anything into flesh. they can't even turn flesh from one animal into flesh from another.

> It still looks, taste, etc. like beard and wine but its essence is different.

that is something I can accept. it's still a cracker, but it has meat "vibes" because of the context in which it is used.

I wouldn't class myself a buddhist per se, but it its the one I most relate to.

>reincarnation
>karma
>kindness to all beings
>meditation
>enlightenment

So yeah, although I class myself as agnostic. If I were to choose a religion, buddhism would be the one.
>>
>>35332082
>but the substance *does*. It still looks, taste, etc. like beard and wine but its essence is different.
So it's just your imagination at work?
>>
Islam. It makes me cringe whenever someone talk about it as THE PEACEFUL RELIGION XD. It's impossible to criticize the institution without getting backlash and a lot of the teachings need constant reiteration to make it relevant with current times. Also it's really easy to sin in Islam. Example:
>Singing and listening to music
>Drawing or making statues of living beings
>Taking more than a few percent of profit in business
>>
>>35332281
Then be specific rather than 'hurr durr one thing can't turn into another'

I read books and that determines my ideology.

I created my own duality between autism and schizotypy based on a theory. I believe that both cultural schizotypy and cultural autism are a thing. I am figuring out where other mental disorders fit in. What about OCD, borderline and the dark triad? Do they manifest into culture as well?

Philosopher John Gray and historian Peter Turchin have made me create a dystopian future outlook.

It is like world building. I don't see how I can be spirtual without believing in gods or woo.

Instead of a god I think that evolution is sort of like 'the force' that transforms a lot. I believe this force is creative but also destructive. Stuart Kaufman meets Lovecraft.
>>
>>35329944
I'm a white Sikh.
I recommend all of you to convert.
>>
>>35329944
Being spiritual is the way stupid people address the fact that evolution is a fact.
>>
>>35332789
It's very real... to you.
>>
>>35332813
Sikhs aren't supposed to attempt to convert people to become Sikh.
>>
>>35332813
I had a dream I converted to Sikh and all the other Sikhs thought I was retarded because they were all brown with turbans and beards and I was white with a painted-on beard and a home-made turban and they thought I was making a joke out of their religion when I was actually just so desperate to fit in. Also in the dream I was a woman so it made the beard part more ridiculous.
>>
>>35329944
It's not really a religion per se, but a set of beliefs I prescribe to.

I don't think that god is a cool guy or a bad guy like in Abrahamic religions or Gnosticism. He's probably some autist who has no idea what the fuck he is doing, but he's trying he's best to make things with qualia have quality experiences.

What I mean is, to him, good is not good and evil is not evil, but merely discrete things. He wants to make our subjective experiences interesting by making it out of discrete things.

'But some people have boring lives,' some might say; however as I've said, this god doesn't know what different states of existence are, but he knows that different states of existence exist. So boring, to him, is unique, just like exciting or sad.

Those are just vast simplifications; however. There are many different combinations.

And through this combination, we have people with wildly different beliefs, experiences, and organisms who perceive a bunch of stuff in their mind.

As for death, that's still a mystery. He's probably going to make it 'interesting' although I can't pinpoint the exact way he makes it so.

I came to this because to me, this seems the most likely. A god who's not trying to be good or evil, but just makes a bunch of stuff for no other intrinsic purpose, than seeing how that stuff interacts. Our perception of morality means nothing to him, but he's amoral not immoral.
>>
>>35332992
So, your god is riddled with ADD? Sounds brtty gud.
>>
>>35333031
Yeah. It does. Ultimately, my beliefs give me comfort in spite of all the various experiences we have.

Life seems like more of a fun game to me than some epic saga with good vs. evil. A game where there's an incomprehensible number of different ways to play.
>>
>>35333096
How does it comfort you? Based on what you believe, your god wouldn't really care aboit you, or anyone else, beyond how interesting your actions are. Not doubting, just want some clarification.

Definitely likely. An immortal being with infinite power probably wouldn't give a shit about right and wrong, only what's fun. That's what I'd do.
>>
>>35333174
It comforts me in the sense that there is no evil that's out to get me, or a good that's out to save me.

If I try thinking that any experience I have is ultimately just a discrete experience, and no evil or good or boring or anything is attached to it, if I think like that god I described, then I have fun.

I try to forget what those experiences mean, but I still know they are discrete experiences that I sense and think of.

It makes life more 'fun' in a sense and far less serious, since I won't care what experiences I have.
>>
>>35333238
It's like a kind of playful version of pyrrhonism. The meaning don't matter, but they are fun and unique in their own ways.
>>
>>35333238
*what experiences I have as long as they are unique.
>>
>>35333238
>>35333257
>>35333270
Huh. This actually sounds really cool. Thanks for elaborating.
