the actual criminal outlaw ones were yeah but if you were a privateer that was basically like being a state-sanctioned pirate. ships were in good condition, crews were well taken care of, you had complete freedom to do whatever and go wherever you wanted, and you got to do all the pillaging and plundering you could handle as long as it was always against the right ships.
