Asian is a geographic classification not a racial one

the word refers to people from the Asian continent, of which India is a subcontinent

Culturally, the race which people consider to be Asian in Western countries has much more to do with the proportion of that race in a country - the UK has many more South Asians than it does East Asians, so when a British person thinks of an Asian, they likely think of a South Asian person, while Americans think of East Asian immigrants because there are far more in the US

India is a diverse country in many ways and there are several angles which you could approach this. Remember that India is foremost a geographic region

Historically, the first "Indian" people were from the Indus river civilization, roughly (5000?) years ago. Situated in the Northwest of India, these people established one of the earliest civilizations. (Indus is the root of Hindu, or Sindhu, important later)

This civilization dispersed around 2000 BCE for unknown causes - there isn't evidence of an invasion nor is there much evidence of a mass scale migration. One theory is simply climate change - the Indus valley started to become more arid. Archeologists are answering many of these questions now.

North India itself was populated with a variety of village people spread throughout the north during this time, known as the Adavasi (sp) people, there wasn't yet any larger scale empire. This changed with the first Aryan Invasion from West Asia (modern day Uzbekistan). From this the Indo-Aryan people of India started to emerge in the North.

Later (thousands of years), the Muslim conquests brought a new group from the Middle East, who conquered the previously Hindu/Buddhist kingdoms of India and established the first caliphates - these kingdoms lasted for another thousand years or so leaving quite a bit of Muslim influence and people

I don't have space to describe too much of the history - so what are the demographics of India today, and who are Indians?
It's hard to define Indian ethically because there are over 2000 ethnic groups in India, breaking into four overarching catergories - indo-aryan, tibeto-burman, dravidian, and austro-asian.

So ethnically doesn't really cut it, there is no "Indian" ethnicity that wouldn't incidentally include a billion other people
Savarkar defines Indian using three different categories, geography, "blood" which is basically culture, and "hinduness" . But there's no clear answer

Who is "most people"?
There's two separate ideas here, how others identify them, and how they identify themselves. I think the media also controls how they think of themselves to some extent, so from this:

So why don't you and the "most people" you talk to?

I am not from the UK, so obviously I have no first hand experience on this. I also think your view is correct, mostly because of changing media types and perception over time. In 2001 the internet was not the dominant source of media for most people. It is now, bringing a much more americentric/global view to most young brits such as yourself.

This Census was from 2001. Perception of "Asians" may have changed during that time, in fact I think it's likely, probably from the growth of the internet and American media dominance on the internet. When you go to a site like 4chan or reddit or whatever, asian means east asian because Americans call East Asians Asians.

From the current BBC asian page, I think there's still a perception at least among South Asians as being more "asian" than "south asian" specifically in the UK

here's what I think is gonna happen:
- east asians will likely identify more as asian in the next 2011 census (rather than "other ethnic group")
- south asians will likely continue to identify as asian because of internal media like pic related branding them as asian
- whites will see south asians as less asian and more "indian" or paki or etc, like in the US
