How fucked am I with a 3.6 and little to no shadowing or volunteering? Can a gap year, possibly as a scribe save me?
>>
>>35253210
Our schools are just super competitive.
>>
>>35253738

They also produce the best doctors which is why so many socialist countries send their students here to learn how to be a doctor
>>
>>35253631

3.6 is decent if you can score average to well on mcat. Shadowing is always a meme and overrated completely just get some sort of shadowing or free clinic volunteering so you can convince them that you know what medicine sort of is and that this isn't some silly whim. I made up 95% of my shadowing from a clinic a volunteered at exactly twice but claimed to have done it for a year or so almost weekly.

Mcat will decide for you. Apply anyways and scribe if you need but research year or two will be better than scribe to help your chances.
>>

I work in a hospital and have a huge crush on an intern, can I still post?
>>
>>35253777
True, but it may be a chicken and egg thing. Are the doctors better because brighter, more motivated people get in to begin with due to the Darwinian nature of our medical peograms?
>>
I always held doctors in high regard and thought it was more of a calling than a career.

Then I got older
>>
>>35253827
Some American doctors I've seen are the least compassionate, stupidest sacks of shit I've ever met. A school's program, even if it's Harvard's or John Hopkin's won't magically make some turbo chad who is good at bullshitting magically become a good doctor. That's up to the individual.

If anything the lack of compassion probably comes from the guarded, backstabbing nature of most pre-med programs.
>>
I don't understand the Murrican system

I was an autistic robot until I started volunteering due to a lack of friends. I thought it was a waste of time considering I needed money to eat and pay for a roof over my head, but once I made time for it I started to realize why it was important. Volunteering taught me how to read people to anticipate their needs and to communicate with them. I actually became a more likeable, less bitter person due to volunteering and being forced to be nice to others (who honestly could have used and deserved that kindness).

wise oldfag here, you guys shouldn't pursue these careers. you're only doing it for the money/social status and to make your parents happy. you'll end up incredibly sad and hating your life. by the time you realize you made a huge mistake you'll be a hundred k in debt and will have to slave away for another 10 years just to break even. You won't even be able to start living life until you're in your 40s with grey pubes. sad.

I don't tell him good job, but I do pretend to like servers and such, and I say thanks, even though I'm paying them. Your patients bought something really precious and expensive, so I think of it as an amped version of the same phenomenon. Basically, acting like they like you is the sociable thing to do, so don't discredit this in your interactions with them.
>>
>>35254150
You pretend to like servers that you think are doing a poor job? You're either full of shit or one in a million and thus don't matter.

Local hospitals. Most have a volunteer office. I highly recommend the Veteran's Administration if you have one nearby you:

>actually let you do cool shit besides cleaning and answering phones

>>35254211

>>
>>35254257
Go at your own pace. You will not be talking about your sex life or wild parties on your first day, especially not with old people. They will probably not try to make conversation with you the first time they see you either. A good way to get over your initial discomfort is asking something like:
>Hello sir/maam, would you like some food or water?
Don't forget to smile.
After you and them get comfortable enough with one another that's when they'll sometimes ask you things like "how's your day going?". However, your relationship with 80-90% of the patients will consist of fetching random food, drinks, or objects for them. That said you might end up in more conversations since the turnover of a nursing home is much lower than a hospital floor.

Your patients don't love you like you originally said. They think you did something very important well. That's all I'm saying famalam. Don't know why this so hard for you to understand.

It depends a lot on how seriously you took your courses. I was a huge bio nerd and so barely had to study for that section and got 99th percentile in that section.

I half assed math and physics and so I had to bust ass in studying for it.

Overall I get a similar response from friends and former students.

The key is to find ONE SET OF OF STUDY MATERIALS and to HONESTLY assess how long it'll take to fill in your knowledge gaps. First things first take a practice test.

In other words, I cannot fairly give you a straight "time" answer without knowing your performance details

No I think you're a retard that's fueled by his fee fees. You have no way of knowing if these people truly buy my bullshit or not you're talking out of your ass. If you smiled when you saved my vision or whatever I would give you a gift basket too. I just want you see it for it is famalam.

Your stats look good. They are about where most people get it in.

What field of work? What kind of volunteering? Able to get letters from either?

I'm sure you've heard the typical explanation of you have to "prove that you've improved" over your year off.

Work is bioinformatics programming. Volunteering is at 2 local hospitals. I plan on getting letters from all these places, but I don't think I can get a good one from any of my professors.

Because you are stupid, and go off on tagents instead of sticking to the subject at hand? So if people lie, how do you know their smiles aren't fake when you bullshit them? Why would you trust their facade if that's your worldview?
>>
>>35253900
Unlike some other countries, you have to get a 4yr degree before you apply to medical school. There isn't a "medicine" degree either, you can literally get a degree in ANYTHING. Then, so long as you get a good GPA and a good MCAT score, you apply and hopefully get in. It's highly recommended, almost mandatory, to add on extra-curriculars to your application like shadowing doctors, having research experience, clinical experience, letters of recommendations, etc.
>>
>>35254765
>Work is bioinformatics programming. Volunteering is at 2 local hospitals. I plan on getting letters from all these places, but I don't think I can get a good one from any of my professors.

If the potential writer shows even a bit of hesitation don't fucking do it. Make sure ask specifically for one that "advocates on your behalf". Google "writing letters for pre-meds" or similar. Make you shine in where they are supposed to talk about you.

Not necessarily bad research. What people look for is how you can articulate your esoteric work to another person. Academia loves sucking each other off when it comes to their work.

Dunno if this is the right thread to ask but since there might be one or two of you med robots who know abour general health issues ill just ask.

I sometimes get occasional sharp pains in my chest that last for a split second. It used to be worse where I would feel it throughout the day. I had 2 docs diagnose me with chronic chest wall pain and noted I have anxiety problems - which I do. Had blood test taken - results are normal. Ekg - heart is normal.

Although Im a bit on the chubby side at 5'7 and 170lbs, I do modest exercise where I do cardio once a week and walk a lot. My diet is pretty normal - I eat a lot of chicken but get in a few servings of vegetables and fruits as well as nuts and drink water more often.

Yet I still experience these sporadic chest pains. What should I do? Drug myself up with pain killers? I dont have health insurance which means Im limited to clinics.

General rule is thus:
Premed courses need to be done at a 4yr. Even bottom tier schools require that.

If you don't care about doing anything other than seeing patients in clinic then you can apply carribean. shitting on Caribbean schools is just stupid circle jerking. If primary care is your goal and it's tough to get into US schools and Caribbean schools will do just fine

I've seen many genius Caribbean students while some of my own classmates are fucking retards that got in because daddy went here

If you were serious about getting into a US School then I would just do pre-med courses for two years at a four-year Institution. You would also need to work your ass off for the MCAT of course. Your science gpa is what is important here

Not do a full science degree thats for fucking sure. I loved art history but I fell for the "pre-med major" meme. Also party a lot more. You don't realize how much free time you had in undergrad until it's gone.

The ideal major is what you find interesting. As long as you're able to fit in the pre-med courses you'll do fine.

I could go on all day about "mistakes". Before I get too pissed off/sentimental I would say is the most common mistake is focusing your energies in areas that really don't fucking matter.

Getting letters from non respected professors doesn't matter. Working in a field that can't be tied to the art of Medicine doesn't matter. Having a fucking laundry list of shit you did without being able to describe what drew you to do those things doesn't fucking matter.
