In my experience, it's because of expectations of society, nothing else.
Centuries before, I could not imagine not doing work. Especially in the agrarculture era. Unlike today, the supermarkets shelvs weren't completly full all the time. You were compelled to pull in and do work.

It doesn't feel like purpose to work at fast food jobs or do reatil or do factory work. There isn't a oppurtunity either.
When I worked these jobs, I didn't feel like I was economically beneficial. I don't deserve 10 bucks an hour. I always felt like a burden, something deplorable.
Same thing with going to the army. It's bullshit
