Naruto is a gateway anime of the worst kind. It's a bad series, a clusterfuck of story and characterization that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for its weaknesses by adding in excessive shipping faggotry and DARKNESS. Evangelion is the obvious recommendation. Absolutely mandatory for anyone who hasn't seen it.

From there you got, GitS (film and SAC), Akira, Serial Experiments Lain, FLCL, Paranoia Agent (and the rest of Satoshi Kon's work).

Getting into more slightly more obscure stuff, you have Boogiepop Phantom, the work of Masaaki Yuasa (Kaiba, Mind Game, Tatami Galaxy, etc.), and visually stunning films like Angel's Egg, Metropolis, or Dead Leaves.

Then you can dig into all the short film compilations by various directors in stuff like Genius Party, Neo Tokyo, Memories, Robot Carnival, etc. There's loads of incredibly creative gems hidden in those.

I've also seen things like Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Revolutionary Girl Utena highly praised, but I've yet to see them.

I'm much more of a film person than an anime person though, so my recommendations are pretty limited.

Why the fuck does everyone go on about NGE like it's so fucking great? It's literally 'im 15 and now im too MATURE nd DEPRESSED for dbz and one piece anymore': the anime. It's fucking boring and really not that deep, "oh wow look hes sad and a pussy just like me :(", who gives a fuck? You've never seen a fucking lame, weak, depressed character before with personality issues? NGE is only good because it's a refresher. It's only likeable if you're underaged, because you're used to kids' shows (including shonen) where everyone's brave and strong and it's the first thing you fucking see when you're 14-16 that's a more realistic approach to the kinds of problems faced in those shows. I'll admit that I loved NGE when I was younger but then I just mellowed out and stopped being such a tard and went back to enjoying things for organic reasons and came back to shonen.

Shows like Naruto are better because the characters aren't made to be horribly boring and bland in attempt at making them realistic, they're different, they react to things in different ways, also everything >>35231034 mentioned is what makes shonen so great.
