Basically with waifu wars, symbolism and ambiguity the show generates a lot of discussion. I thought it was a fun ride, but I couldn't get invested in EoE for some reason, probably because so much crazy shit happens in an hour and a half.

I like the Eva units themselves. Media with humanity playing god and releasing the chaos of life/god/nature always interests me. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and FF7 evokes the same feelings, I'm not sure what to call it.

I don't think it was supposed to be 'deep' other than an expression how he felt through Shinji.

Evangelion was just supposed to be something you could relate to seeing a young boy struggle to cope with being forced into adult situations struggling with depression. Only norminos dismiss it as pretentious and whatever because they can't possibly understand what actual depression feels like and the toll it takes on your attitude and actions.

I watched the first 'version' of Eva (apparently there's other seasons or whatever? I dunno) and I really didn't get it. I'm not sure if it really is 3 deep 5 me or if it didn't make sense, but it was really, really boring. I'm okay with anime that focuses on plot and not giant explosions, I prefer them, but I feel like there was hardly even dialogue in the show. Can any eva fans actually tell me why this show has meme status on the internet ? I get the impression people don't actually like it as much as they say they do and just want to seem deep and cultured or whatever the fuck, like some people do with Souls games.

Evangelion's story and characters are purposely set up be vague. This is done so that the viewer fills the missing pieces themselves, essentially putting part of themselves into the story and making it their own. As a result my Evangelion viewing experience is different from yours. I don't find Evangelion "deep" in a philosophical sense or in it's psychological themes but the show is multilayered in its storytelling and every time I watch it I pick up on something new- I think that's why people become so attached to Eva. Also it's so badass watching an Eva fight a parasitic angel- the designs are so cool. I could gush about Evangelion for so long man.

I never said this NGE isn't even my favorite anime. The point is just that it was an expression of how Anno felt about depression and coming of age, etc and I thought in that respect it does a good job.

Sure it has a shitty pretentious fanbase, but I don't think that makes the anime bad. I think it did what it intended to well and was entertaining to me at least and that's good enough.

it's a legitimate expression of the creator's (Hideaki Anno's) depression and his attempts to cope and the lessons he's learned from it, and simultaneously a meta critique on otaku culture and anime being used as a tool for escapism.

shinji's core motif of "why do i pilot the eva?" is synonymous with "why do i continue to live/exist?". his declaration of "i mustn't run away" is synonymous with "i should not kill myself/retreat into escapism". the core theme of the series is learning how to deal with pain and loneliness when there's no good ending/happiness in sight.

he does deal with it. he does it in a roundabout way, but he still overcomes it.

in EoE he initiates instrumentality because he has no reason to live and believes that by becoming one with all of humanity he'll never feel pain or loneliness again. but then when he begins to experience it he realizes that joining everyone into once consciousness effectively means there's only one being, and there's literally nothing more lonely than being the only thing in existence.

in order to feel love you have to know the pain of rejection. shinji spent the entire series avoiding this rejection at all costs to avoid pain. in the end, he rejects instrumentality because he finally understands that even though he's not happy now (and he might never be), as long as he is alive and feels pain there's always the chance that he'll be able to experience love or find something worth living for.

this is encapsulated by the end scene where asuka strokes his face and shows him the first sincere expression of human kindness shinji has ever felt, and it completely overwhelms him.


the congratulations at the end of 26 was shinji's subconscious projections of his friends/family congratulating him for finally coming to this realization. asuka even makes fun of him for it

the fact that he's a little bitch for the entire show is what hits this point home harder. if there was ever a character in fiction who would have every reason to just off himself or dissolve into the aether it's shinji. but he doesn't do that. he sees the futility in that, because there's effectively no difference between instrumentality and death, and it turns out he really does want to live after all.

Lain was too confusing to me. With Eva I was pretty confused but I had an okay idea if the story up untill EoE and now after having rewatched it twice I think I mostly get it.

With Lain I was pretty onboard up untill about episode 8 or so and then the "god" character shows up and the ending happens. I didn't understand one bit.
