Who knows where I'll end up in the end, quite possibly in a monastery indeed.

Also, monasticism is by no way limited to Western religions. There's many, many Eastern-religious monasteries throughout the world, including USA.

An easy example is all the Zen Buddhist temples and the Krishna-based monasteries like ISKCON

I did. There is Mt. Athos, a cloister island that is part of Greece, where there are no women allowed. But I'm not religious :/

Carmelites are an awesome order. There's a Traditional Benedictine monastery staring in my country soon, might consider going down sometime and joining up

Why do monks exist in today's society? I'm serious, what service do they do that makes them an institution that still exists?
