It's a part of a bigger problematic trend in society, where male is assumed to be the default and the femele is something special. It's sexist, but that's how society is. Other examples include man/woman, male/female, brony/pegasister.
An example going the other way is lolita/brolita, so male standard is not universal, but it's common and it is problematic.
