I've been here since 2006 and /b/ was never good, it's essentially the exact same thing it always just less raids and CP. After 2007-2008 it became more mainstream and nornies flooded /b/ after the media started reporting on it. Although it goes through trends it's been the same thing forever.

/r9k/ used to be a greentext board essentially then suddenly all the depressed people from /b/ decided to come here and cry about their problems.
